Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources tours NWSC Projects in Kampala

The Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources today inspected NWSC Projects in Kampala as part of its oversight and accountability role.

The MPs were conducted around the NWSC Projects at Ggaba Water Works and Bugolobi-Nakivubo Sewerage Treatment Plant by Deputy Managing Director Technical services Engineer Johnson Amayo.

The MPs wanted to familiarise themselves with NWSC projects and appraise themselves of progress and challenges in the projects.

The MPs were impressed with the pace, extent, social footprint and magnitude of the works undertaken by NWSC to increase water supply from 180 million litres per day to 240 million litres per day after the snag resolution period.

The MPs were particularly impressed by the progress at the 45 million litre per day capacity sewerage treatment plant under construction in Bugolobi. Eng. Johnson Amayo informed the MPs that the project is the largest of its kind in East and Central Africa. It will serve 850,000 people, treat 45 million litres of waste water per day, generate 630kw of electricity, treat water from the heavily polluted Nakivubo Channel and deploy nuisance free technology to reduce and eliminate smell.

Addressing the parliamentarians at the wrap up and exit meeting, the MD Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha underscored the commitment of NWSC to deliver water for all. The MD detailed ongoing and planned projects to ensure reliable water supply for greater Kampala up to 2040. He highlighted the increased capacity of NWSC to meet its mandate demonstrated through a clear strategic direction, growth in productive assets, increased billing, rapid geographical expansion, increased rate of expansion of Water mains and distribution networks and enhanced customer care. He said this will propel NWSC to 100% coverage in all her operational areas.

The parliamentarians sought to understand the challenges faced by the corporation in providing water to Ugandans.

The MPs undertook to support NWSC to secure project funding for further service delivery. They also pledged to work with the budget committee to secure budgetary allocation for the new NWSC SCAP100 programme (Service Coverage Acceleration programme).

Wrapping up on behalf of the MPs Dr Kefa Kiwanuka praised NWSC for being efficient and responsive. He said NWSC was without doubt one the best performing Government Parastatal. He said NWSC has set the bar very high and had a reputation to protect. He therefore challenged NWSC to keep being efficient and responsive.

MPS who inspected the projects included: Honourable Members Dr Kefa Kiwanuka, Reagan Okumu, David Mutebi, Norah Bigirwa, Patrick Nsamba, Simon Oyet, Anne Maria Nankabirwa, Herbert Edmund Adriko and Frederik Angura.

Other MPs included Geoffrey Dhamuzungu, Aja Baryayanga, Mudimi Womakuyu, Robert Nandeshe and Oliver Katwesigye.
