On 3rd September 2026, Kiryandongo District Woman MP, Hon. Katusiime Jovia Mbabazi, raised a matter of urgent national importance on the floor of Parliament concerning the continued threat of lightning strikes in schools across Kiryandongo District.
This concern follows the tragic loss of three pupils of Kizibu Nursery School, who were laid to rest in Kikunya Village Mboira Subcounty recently, as well as repeated lightning incidents at Runyanya Primary School in KiryandongoSubcounty, where learners and teachers remain exposed to serious danger and school infrastructure has been damaged.
In Parliament, Hon. Katusiime called upon Government to take immediate and lasting measures to protect learners and teachers, including:
🔹 Compensation for families who have lost their children to lightning strikes.
🔹 Renovation and reconstruction of damaged classrooms and school facilities to ensure that children study in safe environments.
🔹 Installation of lightning arrestors and proper lightning protection systems in schools located in lightning-prone areas.
🔹 Construction of protective fences around vulnerable schools where necessary to enhance the safety of learners.
🔹 A comprehensive assessment of schools across Kiryandongo to identify those at high risk and ensure preventive measures are put in place before more lives are lost.
🔹 Greater sensitisation of schools and communities on lightning safety and appropriate precautions during thunderstorms.
The loss of even one child is a tragedy for a family and the entire community. The loss of three young pupils is a painful reminder that urgent preventive action is needed.
“As your Woman Member of Parliament, I will continue to speak for the people of Kiryandongo and press Government to prioritise the safety and welfare of our children. Our children deserve to learn in schools where they are protected from avoidable risks. No parent should have to bury a child because of a danger that could have been prevented,” Hon. Katusiime Jovia Mbabazi said.
