Over 400 Attend the 2017 Employer of The Year Awards

Over 400 prominent employers in the public and private sector attended the 2017 Employer of the Year Awards (EYA) which were held at Kampala Serena Hotel on 20th September 2017 under the theme ‘HR Analytics: Using people data to create value’.

This year Uganda Breweries, Unilever Uganda and National Social Security Fund (NSSF) won Gold, Silver and Bronze respectively in the Overall Winners’ categories.

The EYA event hosted by the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE) is a corporate and social event aimed at recognizing and awarding the best employers in several categories as a climax of an undergoing surveys carried out among established companies and SMEs under a specific people practice theme.

The Federation of Uganda Employers since 2001 has run EYA once every two years, in collaboration with an independent reputable and management consultancy team from Makerere University, to survey existence and reward outstanding execution of world class HR practices premised on the known fact that every organization is only as good as its people.

Speaking during the event, Guest of Honour, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi State Minister for Housing who represented the Honorable Speaker of Parliament Right Honourable Rebecca Kadaga commended FUE for the EYA initiative and urged more public institutions to participate since Government is the largest employer in the public sector.

‘I appeal to other public institutions out there to also participate in future surveys because Government is the largest employer and as the public sector we can learn as much from participating in such initiatives as well as the private sector learning about the good things we have and how we do them.’ He said.

The EYA are a result of a survey which was conducted in 2016/2017 and whose criteria includes among others how best companies follow the Employment Act 2006, the Occupational Safety & Health Act, the Labour Unions Act 2006, the Labour Disputes (Arbitration & Settlement) Act 2006, the Workers Compensation Act 2000, the NSSF Act 1985 among others.

Silver Winner – Unilever Uganda

Bronze Winner – National Social Security Fund

As she retires after 17 years of service, Mrs. Rosemary Ssenabulya the outgoing Executive Director (ED) FUE was recognized with an award for her distinctive service to the employer fraternity.

Mrs. Rosemary Ssenabulya thanked all the participants, appreciated the support of sponsors and support of the entire EYA team that made the event a success.
