The State Minister for Sports Hon. Peter Ogwang has today presented a statement on Uganda’s readiness to co-host AFCON Pamoja 2027 following concerns raised by Hon. Ismail Kasule, MP Hoima West on the floor of Parliament.

He said the construction of Hoima City Stadium has been completed and the defects liability period will expire in December 2026.

The Minister said Government remains fully committed to delivering a successful AFCON 2027. “We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the required infrastructure, services, and support systems are completed within the agreed timelines,” Hon. Peter Ogwang.

The Minister said they are awaiting the award of contract and confirmation of financing for the outstanding funding gaps to facilitate the construction of the passenger terminal at Kabalega Airport.

He added that works on Makerere University training facility are also in progress with a completion date of August 2026.

For Kyambogo University training facility, the Minister said phase II of the construction works is progressing well, and the facility is expected to be completed by August 2026.

For Namboole Stadium, Hon. Peter Ogwang said that in February 2026, the Ministry signed an MOU with the Ministry of Defence for the expansion of the Stadium, which will see the sitting capacity upgraded from 38,268 to 45,000.

Other areas of expansion and improvements include the VVIP and VIP lounges, the media tribune, stadium media Centre, press conference rooms, the mixed zone, spectator-related areas, medical areas, among others.
