Uganda: Sama, the provider of accurate data for ambitious AI, today announced the opening of its new office in Gulu, Uganda. Its second in the country, Sama’s Gulu presence is in addition to its office in Kampala and is expected to support the company’s ongoing growth strategy in East Africa.
As demand grows for effective and non-biased AI solutions in the midst of a post-pandemic world, Sama’s East African offices continue to meet clients’ growing demand for accurate and effective AI.
“We have been in Gulu for 8 years through a shared space with Gulu University campus. Securing our own office space demonstrates our commitment to continued investment in Uganda and providing employment to the talented youth we have worked with over the years,” said Greg Moser, VP, Global Delivery Service at Sama.
Founded in 2008 as a non-profit on the basis of empowering individuals by equipping them with the right skills for the future of work, Sama has since transitioned to a for-profit business model. Through this model, the company is focused on scaling its business to continue to provide high-quality training data for ambitious AI for some of the world’s leading organizations such as Google, NVIDIA, Walmart and Getty.
Currently, Sama employs hundreds in Uganda across its Gulu and Kampala centres. Through its unmatched digital offerings, Sama hopes to increase its impact in the region with this new addition. The company also has a significant workforce in Kenya where it has its largest operation in East Africa.
“The opening of our second office in Uganda is an important milestone for Sama. We are optimistic and excited about the new opportunities it will bring in terms of creating additional employment opportunities, empowering citizens and inspiring new business development in the country,” said Alex Gichuru, Country Director, Sama Uganda.
Sama first started operations in Gulu in 2012 through a partnership with Oxfam to assist youth in Northern Uganda affected by civil war.
