Federation of Uganda Employers to improve employment in Uganda
The Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE) has shared plans to improve labour productivity in Uganda through allocation of natural resources to create more jobs for employers in Uganda through application of meaningful business mathematics.
Speaking at the National Labour Day celebrations in Agago district, FUE chairman and MD National Water and Sewerage Corporation Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha said that the federation will work with its network of employers to explore use of the following approaches that can potentially improve labour productivity;
a) Use or performance incentives that can accelerate achievement of minimum wage.
b) use of performance contracts to reduce on free-riding on the side of individual and groups of employees in the private sector, government agencies and the mainstream civil service.
C) Tailoring training and capacity development for all categories of employees for both the formal and informal sector.
d) Introduction of other avenues for continuous learning, benchmarking and exposure to new and emerging labour productivity enhancement measures through research and development.
He appreciated the employers whose extra- ordinary initiatives make it possible for workers to get employment. “I want to appreciate the outstanding workers who distinguish themselves as true patriotic Ugandans through their commitment and passion in doing quality work.” he said
According to Dr. Silver, the current Government strategic priority areas of national economic development favour employers to innovate and improve productivity.
“Specifically, FUE finds that emphasis on infrastructure (mainly roads), power, ICT and labour are extremely critical at this stage of national development,” he said.
Dr. Silver on behalf of the new leadership of FUE that came into place on 21st March 2019 appreciated Mr Nicholas Okwir and his team for leading FUE for the last six (6) years.
He requested for regular interactions with government, input into the national economic plans to ensure coordination and effective policy implementation for the good of the country
He shared that the new FUE leadership has the mission of strengthening collaboration with Government, closely working with national organisation of trade union (NOTU), Central Organisation of Free Trade Unions (COFTU), enhancing and diversifying value preposition for employers and increasing the financial sustainability of the Federation.
In his remarks, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni applauded the new FUE leadership.
Last year, during the labour day celebrations in Sembabule district, H.E Yoweri K Museveni gave the labour statistics about the number of registered companies and number of employees per employment sector.
“I’m happy to hear that the new FUE leadership has taken good cognizance of the need to allocate resources in such a way that creates more jobs for the people. He tasked the new team to help farmers move from subsistence farming to modern farming. This will create more jobs for the people”. be advised.
Special to note that this year’s Labour Day is unique since it marks the Centenary Anniversary (100 years) of the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO’s) existence and achievements to build global justice in the world of work.
The theme for the day was “promoting employment through enhanced public infrastructure.”
