The National Rugby Sevens Series rolls out this Heroes Day weekend as giants Hima Heathens host the first of seven legs on Saturday, June 9 at Kyadondo Rugby Club.
Some of the teams expected to participate are Betway Kobs, Toyota Buffaloes, Pirates, Rhinos, Mongers from Entebbe, Hippos from Jinja, Walukuba from Jinja and Stallions. In total, 15 teams will be participating in the tournament that is billed to attract hundreds of fans.
Beyond the action on the pitch and usual extras like music, nyama choma and drinks, Hima Cement has lined up several attractions to indulge players and fans. Among the various activities on the day, Hima will challenges like the Hima Dash and Hima Kicking Challenge for fans to participate and win Hima Cement goodies including jerseys, cement bags and so much more.
Through its sponsorship of rugby, the cement manufacturer wants to ensure that the tournament acts as a platform to grow the sport in Uganda and beyond borders.
According to Philip Kiboijana, the Vice Chairman of Kyadondo Rugby Club, Saturday will not only attract loyal rugby fans but will also welcome revellers, thereby setting the sport up for long-term success. “Hima sponsorship helps the teams in preparation for the games and motivation so that when they get on the pitch, they play professional rugby. Hima associating with rugby is good for the sport and helps to boost confidence in the players,” he said. Gates to the tournament on Saturday will open at 8:00am with entrance fee going for Ugx 5,000 only.
