The Government of Uganda, through the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), continues steady implementation of the Kanungu Water Supply Improvement Project.
Goal: Increase safe water production by a minimum of 2 million litres per day, strengthen transmission & storage, and expand the network serving Kihihi and surrounding communities in Kanungu District.
Construction period: 18 months (started 27 February 2026) + 12-month defects liability period.
Project Components
• Matanda–Kihihi: New spring source (≥1M litres/day), pump station, ~13.3 km pumping main + 200,000-litre elevated reservoir
• Mpangango/Katete–Kihihi: Source upgrade (1M → 2M litres/day), pump station, ~5.5 km pumping main + 12.6 km gravity main
• Kihanda: ~7.2 km gravity pipeline + associated works
• Distribution improvements (Butogota, Kihanda & selected network upgrades).
Key Milestones Completed.
• All sites handed over to the Contractor (GETS Technical Services) on 22 January 2026
• Contractor fully mobilised – camps, material stores & workshops established at Matanda and Katete/Mpangango
• Successful stakeholder & community engagement meeting held on 11 June 2026 at Katete
• Topographical surveys completed
• Confirmatory soil investigations & structural designs for both spring sources finalised.
Construction Progress
• Pipeline laying: 13.2 km of the planned ~40 km network already installed 33% complete
• Additional pipes continue to arrive on site
• Construction materials (cement, reinforcement, aggregates, hardcore, timber) delivered to both main sites – cutting & preparation ongoing
• Earthworks at the Matanda spring source have commenced.
On-the-ground activity
Delivery of transmission pipes, active trenching & pipelaying, site inspections by NWSC & Contractor teams, stocked material stores, concrete mixers and formwork materials all in place.
Work is progressing concurrently across sources, transmission lines and associated infrastructure.

Temporary construction impacts (excavation, traffic, noise) are being managed through traffic control, safety measures, timely reinstatement and prior community notification.
Looking Ahead
Pipeline laying, source development and infrastructure works will continue in parallel. Material deliveries remain ongoing to maintain momentum.
Successful delivery depends on continued cooperation between NWSC, the Contractor, local government, community leaders and residents along the routes.
The shared objective remains clear: reliable, sustainable water services for the people of Kanungu.
