Innocent Kawooya, NIM; Impactrepreneur: The Unstoppable Rise of Uganda’s Youngest National Independence Medallist

Innocent Kawooya, who was visibly shocked and young when President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni personally bestowed the Diamond Jubilee National Independence Medal upon him a year ago, is still very much in the spotlight, and the noise level has escalated.

This wasn’t just a one-off; what Uganda witnessed that day was the validation of a man whose impact spans entertainment, technology, and the digital destiny of Africa.

Kawooya continues to rule the news, the award shows, and the boardrooms. He is well-known in the entertainment sector for his work moulding Uganda’s music industry over the past decade through the HiPipo Music Awards, and he is now a global figure in digital transformation.

He has been a national medallist in addition to being a film star, producer, author, entrepreneur, and champion for financial inclusion. His resume reads like a laundry list of accomplishments.Kawooya was named the FinTech CEO of the Year for 2024 and 2025 at the Middle East and Africa Awards, and HiPipo was named the Best Financial Inclusion Organisation in the Middle East and Africa for both of those years.

However, it was the team he leads who, in 2012, made history by creating the first major East African digital-driven awards platform, the HiPipo Music Awards, opening doors for Uganda’s creatives and artists. His true motivation, hidden beneath the glitz, has always been the same: to help the downtrodden.

More than 1,200 homes have received Solar M7 kits through his community-driven 100 Days of Solar program, which has improved the lives of more than 10,800 individuals and prevented 1,850 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Instead of using kerosene, candles, or expensive generators, families now study at night, women work to earn money after dark, and kerosene and candles are no longer used. And that’s not all. In five years, the goal is to expand the Solar M7 program to 5 million homes and small businesses across Africa, igniting the largest people-powered clean-energy movement on the continent.

With the addition of the 40 Days 40 FinTechs, Women-in-FinTech Hackathon, and Digital Impact Awards Africa, HiPipo has established itself as a leading voice in digital and financial inclusion in Africa.

Today, thousands of women cross-border traders are empowered with interoperable digital payments thanks to HiPipo’s financial and digital literacy initiatives in Malawi, Zambia, and the wider COMESA region, made possible through a partnership with the Gates Foundation and COMESA Business Council.

Underneath all the pomp and circumstance, the CEO, medallist, actor, and author lies a father who enjoys football, laughter, and good company. He is described by his coworkers as “positive energy in human form.” He has lived a lifetime at the young age of 37. The man hasn’t even begun yet, according to himself.
