Official Statement from Regional Director’s Hope4Karamoja

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the launch of the #Hope4Karamoja campaign. The campaign launches during a critical time in our nation when to the best of our knowledge, over 1.6 million people are in dire need of food relief. Karamoja undoubtedly being the most hit region. To date, reports indicate over 60 people have starved to death and millions remain starved in the last two months alone. Sources on the ground indicate that these numbers are growing every other day. Thousands are living on one cup of water a day. It’s a worrying state of affairs.

A report by the integrated Food Security Phase Classification (January 2017), indicates that unless there is an intervention, the food security problem will go on until end of July when the next harvest is anticipated and the poor are likely to sell off their assets thus increasing the vulnerability.

Famine is a social phenomenon that calls for a collective action. We cannot sit back while our fellow countrymen are starving away.

Sustainable Development Goal Number 2: Is about Ending of Hunger.

We cannot build a productive, peaceful nation on empty stomachs. We must join hands, take collective responsibility and salvage this situation. And that’s primarily the reason as to why we came up with #Hope4Karamoja Campaign.

Through this campaign, we hope to rally you the press, the general public, our associates, partners, the NGO fraternity, the private sector, in the fight against death by hunger. We believe that if we unite, we can have a massive impact in reversing what already is a life-threatening problem.
