Hailstorms destroy Mbarara as Rwizi Arch Hotel is left on the ground

Heavy rains with hailstorms destroyed Mbarara town and surrounding areas last evening leaving the area in need of urgent attention.

Residents have called for government intervention as hundreds of people were left homeless while others face major famine after their gardens were destroyed and washed away by torrential rains.

Rwizi Arch Hotel in the area was not spared as it collapsed trapping many people who were residents and/or had gone to get shelter from the heavy rains. It is alleged that many are dead but as of now access has been blocked to the sight. 8 people have so far been confirmed dead as the rescue mission goes on..

People outside collapsed hotel in Rwebikona

Two other people are suspected dead at Rwebikona after they were swept by floods to Rwizi Arch Hotel on a boda boda as water cut off the road from Rwebikona to Mbarara town. A boda boda man carrying a passenger forced himself into water but they drowned helplessly.

Police rescue team and the Red Cross are already at the scene to rescue survivors.

Rwizi Arch Hotel is one of the most popular entertainment spots in the western Uganda town. The incident comes two years after a huge fire outbreak at the same Rwizi Arch Hotel that destroyed property worth millions of shillings.
