Elioda Tumwesigye appointed chair of specialized Technical Committee on Education, Science and Technology at AU
The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Hon. Elioda Tumwesigye was recently at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa handed over the chair of the Specialized Technical Committee on Education, Science and Technology, by the outgoing Chair and Senegalese Minister for Higher Education, Research and Innovation H.E Cheikh Oumar Hanne.
The handover was witnessed by Dr. Shamila Nair-Bedouelle the UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Natural Resources and H.E Prof Sarah Mbi Enow Anyang, the African Union Commissioner for Human Resources, Science among others. Also in attendance were Ministers responsible Education and/or Science / Research, Technology and Innovation and other heads of delegations from the 55 Member States of the AU.
Uganda will hold the position of Chair for 2 years up to December 2021 and then continue as Rapporteur for an extra 2 years.
Hon. Elioda’s Committee oversees the AU Deparrment of Human Resources, Science and Technology; the African Union Scientific, Technical and Research Commission (AU-STRC) as well as the programmes of the African Scientific Research and Innovation Council (ASRIC).
“We report to the AU Executive Council which reports to the AU Heads of State Summit. We also directly report to the Summit of the Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government (C10) Championing Education, Science and Technology. In our meeting we agreed to establish the AU Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Fund to suppprt various education initiatives, Research & innovation and the AU STI Business Incubators among others. This is an opportunity to contribute ideas to shape the destiny of Africa through Education, Science and Technology.
