Education is key for the job market-Eng Silver Mugisha

The Federation of Uganda Employers Chairman Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha has urged employers to promote coaching, mentorship and education at their workplaces to improve employee productivity.

In an interview during the opening ceremony of the 108th session of the International Labour Organization Conference in Geneva, Dr. Silver said that employers should put key emphasis on sustainable development, promote the migitation of effects of climate change and ensure social justice and inclusion at the work place.

He added that organisations should look beyond aid and develop a self sustaining mentality, increase focus on technical and vocational skills development for staff, inculcate the need for life-long learning, put emphasis on education for staff as key in supporting access to and retention in the job market in Uganda.

He further urged the employers to embrace principles of the tripartite agreement of the International Labour Organization.

The Executive Director FUE Mr Douglas Opio, shared that the event is a special International Labour Conference since it marks the centenary celebration of ILO’s existence. A tripartite organisation that has been at the forefront in the promotion of decent work for all.


“We need to discuss the future of work while taking into account the future of the businesses that shall create the desired jobs. Busineses need the right environment to create sustainable and decent jobs,” he said.

The Ugandan delegation to Switzerland is led by the Hon Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Hon Janat Mukwaya who is leading a tripartite delegation of Government that includes Permanet Secretary Mr Pius Bigirimana and the Director and Commissioner of Labour while the employers delegation is led FUE Chairman Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha and the worker’s delegation led by Mr Peter Werikhe Secretary General of NOTU respectively.
