Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa says Parliament is fully committed to allocating the necessary budget for National Child Benefit

The Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa today morning officiated at the National Child Benefit High-Level Dialogue Meeting held at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel, where the focus was on social protection for children with disabilities.

Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa said it is heartening to witness such an essential dialogue taking place, as disability should never define the abilities of these children.

“A social protection scheme for children with disabilities is not a favor—it is their right, and it is our responsibility to invest in them, ensuring they have the opportunity to reach their full potential,” he added.

He advised that, before this scheme is implemented, there must be safeguards in place to ensure that funds are directed specifically to support these children, rather than being misappropriated, especially in rural areas where oversight can be challenging.

He said as Parliament, they are fully committed to allocating the necessary budget for this initiative. He extended extend his gratitude to the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, a Ministry dedicated to serving ordinary Ugandans and to UNICEF Uganda for organizing this vital dialogue.

More conversations like this are crucial to ensuring that no child with a disability is left behind.
