Uganda has lost a statesman and an elder, we can confirm. Mzee Boniface Byanyima, the father of former Mbarara Municipality MP and current head of Oxfam International, Winnie Byanyima and father in law to Rtd Col. Kizza Besigye has passed away.
Byanyima, 97, passed on today at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala where he has been receiving specialized treatment from.
Mzee Byanyima was a staunch member of the Democratic Party, and former National Chairman of the party. He was also the former head teacher of Mbarara High School. He was the father of 6.
Mzee Byanyima was a foster father and provided shelter to young President Yoweri Museveni when he was still school-going. He also looked after and provided support to the now deceased mother of the President Eesteri Kokundeka.
But unlike his daughter Winnie, who served for several years under Museveni’s NRM regime, the former statesman remained opposed to the regime until time of his demise. His wife Gertrude Byanyima also died close to 10 years ago.
