Ssembabule: The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd. has commissioned new and refurbished sanitation facilities at Kabagarame Market in Sembabule District, aimed at improving public health, sanitation and safety for market vendors and the surrounding community. The facilities, located near EACOP’s Main Camp and Pipe Yard 3 (MCPY 3), are expected to serve more than 500 market dwellers who come from 16 surrounding villages, including Kabayola, Kyemandwa A and B, Kagango, Kabusa, Kidokilo, Nambirizi, Muyenje, Kyololo, Nsambya, Njaza, Mitti, Mabaale, Kasekera, Kyatulo and Kisindi.The newly commissioned infrastructure includes a 10-stance drainable pit latrine block serving both male and female users, with the facilities designed to provide adequate ventilation, lighting and privacy.
The site also includes a rainwater harvesting tank, with the entire facility integrated into a landscaped environment. The intervention is part of EACOP’s commitment to Community Health and Safety and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on Clean Water and Sanitation. Through its community investment programmes, EACOP focuses on five key pillars: Future Generations, Environment, Community Health and Safety, Water Solutions, and Sustainable Energy.
In Sembabule District, EACOP has also provided 14 water-harvesting facilities to communities in Buzirandulu, Kiteredde and Njaza, supporting access to water and strengthening community resilience.
Speaking at the commissioning, EACOP Deputy Managing Director John Bosco Habumugisha said access to clean water and sanitation remains critical to improving the health and productivity of communities.
“Access to clean and safe water remains a significant challenge in Uganda. By providing this vital resource, we have taken a commendable step towards empowering the people of Kabagarame Market and enabling them to lead healthier and more productive lives,” said Habumugisha.
Rwamalinga Brian, Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Sembabule District, commended EACOP for supporting efforts to address the sanitation and water access gap in local communities.
“There is no greater social dignity than access to proper sanitation and water. This facility has very ably addressed that need. We thank the East African Crude Oil Pipeline for contributing to closing the water and sanitation gap in communities where it operates,” he said.
The Kabagarame Market intervention reinforces EACOP’s broader commitment to delivering tangible, community-centred development outcomes across its project footprint, with a focus on improving livelihoods, health, safety and access to essential community infrastructure.
