Hon. Fred Byamukama, the Minister for Works and Transport has announced immediate measures to strengthen safety in bus operations following a meeting with bus operators, Traffic Police and other transport stakeholders yesterday at the Ministry Headquarters in Kampala.

For long-distance routes of more than 300Kms, a driver who completes a journey must be replaced for the return journey. The same driver should NOT drive back on the same route.

Traffic Police has been directed to apprehend those who disregard this requirement.

For short-distance routes of less than 300Kms, a driver is allowed to drive to the destination and return once. After returning to where the journey started, that driver must stop for the day. The driver cannot undertake a third leg on the same day.

Bus operators have been urged to comply with these measures, which are aimed at reducing driver fatigue, and improving passenger safety on Uganda’s roads.
