Kampala: The British High Commission today hosted a joint pre-departure reception for Uganda’s 2026/27 Chevening and Commonwealth Scholars, celebrating their achievements ahead of postgraduate study in the UK.
This year, 6 Ugandan scholars have been awarded the Chevening Scholarship and 30 scholars have received Commonwealth Scholarships to study at leading UK universities. The scholars will pursue master’s and doctoral programmes in public health, education, climate change, economics, engineering, technology, governance and the sciences.
The Deputy British High Commissioner to Uganda, Tiffany Kirlew, congratulated the scholars and encouraged them to make the most of the opportunities that studying in the UK offers:
“These scholarships are much more than academic awards. They are investments in people, leadership and lasting connections between Uganda and the UK. We are proud to support outstanding Ugandans who will gain new knowledge, networks and experiences in the UK and return home ready to contribute to Uganda’s development and prosperity.”
The reception brought together the Ministry of Education and Sports, the British Council, partners, university leaders, members of the Chevening and Commonwealth Alumni Associations and private sector partners committed to widening access to UK scholarships and educational opportunities. Scholars connected with alumni, received pre-departure advice and heard first-hand accounts of studying in the UK.
The UK Government, through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office funds both programmes, reflecting the UK’s commitment to developing future leaders andstrengthening international partnerships. Since 1983, more than 370 Ugandans have received Chevening Scholarships; the Commonwealth Scholarship programme has supported over 1,900 Ugandan scholars and fellows since its founding.

“These scholarships provide talented Ugandans with an opportunity to gain world-class education and international experience while building skills that contribute to national development. We congratulate this year’s scholars and look forward to the impact they will make in their respective fields.”
