South Sudanese refugee Akuot releases debut single & video of “Anavyonifanya”

The upcoming talented South Sudanese songstress Akuot has released a new single “Anavyonifanya” produced by renowned Kenyan producer Herbalist and Wyre as Co-Producer. The urban pop smash single has a touch of urban sound fused with Zouk and some jazzy touch, showcasing Akuot’s versatility.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the song, Akuot says “Anavyonifanya” is a song about love in the refugee camps which is sometimes seen as impossible, yet the same refugees are also human beings with feelings. Adding, “It’s a fun song that still has a very serious meaning when put it in reality and one that we can easily to relate to”.  According to Akuot, being a refugee is just a status that can change any time and therefore love is inevitable.

The music video of “Anavyonifanya” is directed by one of the most sought after music directors, Alex and was co-written by Akuot and Wyre. As she continues to solidify her brand in Kenya and beyond, Akuot is currently planning on working with more acts in the industry and is keen on those who share a vision and style similar to hers. She says, “It’s very exciting to finally have a song released to my fans and finally being able to fully define myself as an artiste.

I was inspired by the stage I’m in in my music career and definitely the things that have been happening around me. I’ve always done love songs at Karaoke’s but this is the fun version amongst all of them. It’s a great depiction of my personality. All these factors influenced its creation.”

Who is Mercy Akuot?

Mercy AKA Akuot is a talented artist from the Dinka community of the South Sudanese natives currently based at the Kakuma Refugee Camp. She is currently riding high with the single “Anavyonifanya”. The song has been produced by super talented producer “Herbalist” under the mentorship of Kevin Wyre.  Mercy describes her music as an urban sound fused with Zouk and some jazzy touch.

Career

Mercy’s musical career began at a young age singing in the church choir and at school. From then on, her career has been on an upward scale and has seen her perform alongside artistes other established artistes. Mercy has also been privileged to perform at the World Refugee Day, 16 Days of Activism among other festivals. Her influence and inspiration comes from Maurice Kirya and Irene Namubiru from Uganda whose music she describes as nostalgic and soothing to her ear.

Music Interests

With a growing audience, the multi-talented artiste has cemented her name in the industry through involvement in women empowerment, and helping underprivileged schools within the refugee camps.  She is currently in the studio recording songs off her first Album; the album will be released in 2018 and will include collaborations with other artistes.

Mercy Akuot was born in South Sudan. She spent part of her childhood between South Sudan and Uganda where her passion for music was realized. Due to the conflict in South Sudan Mercy and her family were forced to flee their country to Kenya. Mercy believes that being a refugee is a status that can change any time and does not let that limit her in conquering her musical journey.
