Kampala City Woman MP Nabilah Naggayi Sempala has said that yesterday’s presidential debate did not deliver to its expectation.
The debate held at Kampala Serena Hotel’s Victoria Hall saw candidates apart from President Yoweri Museveni who did not attend tell the nation what is expected from them.
Nabilah Naggayi Sempala said the debate did not deliver as expected
Nabilah reacted through her Facebook wall that debate failed to deliver and the FDC debate between Kizza Besigye and Mugisha Muntu was far better. Below is her post.
Candidates during the first ever live presidential debate in Uganda
“The much anticipated Presidential Debate did not really deliver up to expectation. The failure had more to do with the management or moderation. Technical problems with the microphones of the candidates, time management and the main guide to such a national debate ought to be the National Constitution! Too often moderators in political debates become part of the story. They frequently don’t have the policy chops to ask good policy questions or respond to dumb policy answers. When they generally agree with a politician, they won’t push back on even the most erroneous or outlandish claims. But if they disagree with a candidate, they’ll push back, no matter how uninformed about the matter at hand they may be. This is related to another they seem to believe it’s their job to argue with candidates rather than facilitate discussions among candidates. The debate is supposed to be with one other, after all, not with the moderator. I think the FDC presidential debate between Gen Muntu and Dr Besigye had more spark! But all the same, we are hopeful because Uganda is slowly maturing on the democratic scene! Next time a few questions from the audience could add more colour to the debate. But I thank my Presidential candidate Dr Besigye for being apt and astute!,” Nabilah Naggayi Sempala posted.
