Parliamentary Committee on Trade & Industry members set to visit Tembo steel industry in Iganga
Around 55 Members of Parliament on Trade, Industry and Tourism are set to visit Tembo Steel factory in Iganga District on a fact finding mission.
The MPs’ visit to the factory follows a petition by a whistleblower to the speaker of Parliament Rt Hon. Anita Anite Among complaining of harsh treatment, low pay among others.
An MP on condition of anonymity said their visit follows a whistle blowers complaint that Tembo factories lack safety measures.
“Our lives are in danger because there’s no safety measures in place and a company that was hired for safety measures is fake with no qualified personnel”.
The MPs on tip off from whistle blower claim accidents that has occurred has not been recorded and no fire extinguishers and MPs want documented wages and working conditions of workers among others.
Safety measures like PPEs are lacking..there’s no safe water for drinking, no toilets enough for all workers ‘ no hand washing points for workers and factories lack First Aid kits..when a worker is injured in a factory he is dumped at a nearest clinic on Gods mercy.
When contacted for comment Tembo managing Director Mr Manish said that he has also got same information saying they are always ready to host.
Other sources say competition in the steel sector is stiff forcing competitors allege anything…Tembo steel is one of the leading steel industries in Uganda and president Museveni is set to visit them soon.
Tembo steel on top of being one of leading steel factories is also among the top tax payers in the country.
