My take on the Zzina Music Awards 2017

Sticking with the music theme, let’s talk about the ZZINA Music Awards which took place last Friday the 7th April at theater Labonita. Here’s how I quickly turned from disgruntled skeptic, to rather impressed and proud about the event.

Let’s be honest, if you’ve had a chance to watch previous music award shows in Uganda especially in the last three years, then I bet you were skeptical about the Zzina awards. As I sat down to watch the show, I was prepared to unleash my negative thoughts on Twitter and Facebook. I expected to see a disorganized presentation, drunken artistes with cringe worthy speeches, recorded performances not in sync with performers, and a delayed ‘everything’!

I was pretty taken aback. The set was beautiful, the MC’s eloquent, and knowledgeable about the artistes they introduced. Sitting with my phone in hand, I had no choice but to join the chorus of praise spreading across social media.

Yes…The Zzina Music Awards were well organized, and certainly a refreshing change to the usual poor standard (fake) award ceremonies we have been treated to by different stakeholders. There were some few glitches especially with time management. But I expect that next year these can be sorted out.

What were your thoughts on this year’s Zzina awards? What do you hope to see next year?

This is my Opinion and you are entitled to yours.

Dixon Bond Okello.
