dfcu sends 13 farmers to Netherlands

As part of its continued support to agriculture, dfcu Bank on Friday flagged off 13 farmers to one of the world’s largest agricultural giants, The Netherlands for a learning excursion after emerging winners in last year’s Best Farmers Competition. 

The farmers were winners in last year’s edition of the ‘Uganda Best farmer’s competition’ which celebrates best farming practices nationally as part of efforts to encourage farmers to take up commercial agriculture methods.

The competition which has been running since 2014 is a partnership between dfcu Bank; Vision Group under the New Vision; KLM and the Netherlands Embassy.

In his remarks, dfcu Bank CEO Mathia Katamba noted that the competition’s last theme,  “Farming as a business” was a reflection of the current state of agriculture in the country.

“Uganda’s agricultural capacity is almost unmatched. At full utilization, we can cater to the food needs of almost 200 million. This sector also gives us the opportunity to transforming the economy through improved production, productivity, post-harvest handling and marketing.”

Mr. Katamba applauded the initiative’s partners whose efforts have made the initiative a resounding success. He congratulated the winners, wishing them a fruitful learning experience. The 13 departed for The Netherlands on Sunday 16 June 2019.

While addressing guests, The Chief Guest at the event Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Mr. Pius Wakabi Kasajja commended all the partners whose commitment has led to the continued success of the competition.

Referring to agriculture as a fundamental part of the country’s economic structure, he called upon the 13 farmers to take advantage of the study tour to improve their skills and further transform the country’s socio-economic status.
