Aketo United and Omar FC secured themselves slots to compete in the Airtel Rising Stars Northern regional championships when they defeated all the local district teams in the Apac Interdistrict games.
Aketo United girls team thumped Anyapo FM 2 nil to capture the girls team slot while Omer FC biys team defeated AnyapoYoung Tigers 6 – 1.
Meanwhile, Mentor defeated Buluge 3 nil and King James defeated Saviours 1 nil in the Lira district games, earning themselves slots in the Northern and West Nile regionals that will take place in Lira from 16th to 18th August. Rapa Girls and King James will represent the Lira girls teams in the regionals.
This year, the Airtel Rising tournament is holding 94 interdistrict championship games in 60 districts with an aim of increasing the talent pool as well as giving schools, teachers, parents and all football lovers an opportunity to support their local players as they participate in the tournament. From these games, 8 boys and 8 girls teams will be chosen to advance to the finals with the tournament finals played on 7th September in Kampala Region.
Additionally, as part of this year’s tournament, the telco will handover goal posts, soccer nets and balls to 40 schools countrywide as a way of keeping the football talent alive even after the tournament. Furthermore, national and regional winners will enjoy an increase in their cash prizes this year. National winners will get UGX7,000,000 from UGX5,000,000 last year while national runners up will get UGX5,000,000 from UGX3,000,000 last year. Regional winners will get UGX1,500,000 up from UGX1,000,000 last year and runners up will get UGX1,000,000 from UGX500,000 last year. Other prizes include certificates for all, medals, trophies, golden boot for MVP, phones and various other ARS merchandise.
