#40Days40FinTechs Zambia and Malawi Edition – Day 9
Airtel Money is at the heart of Malawi’s digital finance revolution—bridging gaps and transforming lives with solutions that go far beyond basic transactions.
Since launching in 2012, Airtel Money has grown into Malawi’s leading mobile money provider, offering seamless person-to-person transfers, bill payments, international remittances, digital loans, savings, and insurance—all from the palm of a hand. Its strategic partnerships with banks and financial institutions like Old Mutual and Britam have enabled the rollout of services like Phuka digital savings and Limodzi Insurance, while its system integrations with all eight Malawian banks have enhanced liquidity for customers and agents alike.

“We believe FinTech is the future,” says Virginia Jere, Head of Marketing at Airtel Money Malawi. “We’re committed to offering inclusive products that address real needs—from collateral-free loans to convenient savings and insurance options.”
And the numbers tell a compelling story. According to FinScope Malawi 2023, the country’s financial exclusion rate has dropped from 51% in 2014 to just 12%—with mobile money usage soaring from 3% to 69%. Airtel Money alone accounts for nearly 85% of Malawi’s mobile money ecosystem, making it a central force in national financial inclusion efforts.

But the journey is not without hurdles. Jere highlights ongoing challenges such as digital literacy gaps, fraud risks, and the high cost of mobile devices. Nevertheless, Airtel Money remains focused on building a secure, borderless, and inclusive financial ecosystem for every Malawian.
Their participation in the #40Days40FinTechs initiative—Zambia and Malawi edition—is amplifying this mission. The initiative, which has spotlighted over 200 FinTechs across Africa, is showcasing how digital finance can create impact at scale.
As Airtel Money continues to evolve, it stands as a powerful example of how technology can drive inclusive growth and economic empowerment.
