Ugandan Sustainability Champion celebrated at King’s Trust Awards ceremony in London

Pascal from Uganda received the Global Sustainability Award at The King’s Trust and TK Maxx and Homesense Awards in London’s Royal Festival Hall on Thursday 26th June

The King’s Trust Group Sustainability Award, sponsored by Octopus Energy, recognises the outstanding achievements of participants on King’s Trust programmes around the world.

• Ahead of the ceremony, Pascal met His Majesty King Charles III during a reception at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the winners’ achievements.

During the star-studded The King’s Trust Awards at Royal Festival Hall, Pascal from Uganda received the King’s Trust Global Sustainability Award. Pascal was presented his award by Verónica da Silva Duarte from Octopus Energy and serial Entrepeneur and TV presenter Eric Collins.

Founded by His Majesty King Charles III, the former Prince of Wales, The King’s Trust International, supports young people across the world through employment, education and enterprise programmes. This year, the charity celebrates ten years since it expanded its work globally, bringing its programmes to over 100,000 young people in underserved communities.

The King’s Trust Awards celebrate young people who have participated in King’s Trust programmes around the world. Guests at the ceremony included Amal and George Clooney, Charlotte Tilbury, Dame Joanna Lumley, DJ Cuppy, Joseph Fiennes and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley among many others.

After taking part in the King’s Trust Enterprise Challenge programme, delivered in partnership with Asante Africa Foundation, Pascal founded his own plastic waste recycling initiative, collecting plastic waste bottles from households, roadsides and markets, turning them into reusable products such as flower bowls, dustbins, and water fountains. He has since become a sustainability champion, offering comprehensive training in sustainable practices for local schools. Pascal’s initiative now successfully recycles 300 kg of plastic waste per month and has led to an 80% reduction in plastic waste in landfills.

One of Pascal’s creations was bought to London ahead of the awards where it was showcased at a private reception with His Majesty King Charles III.

When presenting his award, Verónica da Silva Duarte from Octopus Energy commented: “We’re big believers in the power of local innovation to drive change. That’s why it’s an honour to present this year’s Global Sustainability Award to Pascal — a brilliant young leader whose grassroots efforts are transforming his community in Uganda.

His work is inspiring the kind of scalable, community-driven impact the world urgently needs. As one of the world’s largest clean energy companies, we’re excited to support and learn from Pascal’s journey as we all strive for a brighter, greener future.”

On his award win, Pascal said: “My business started as a small idea to collect and recycle plastic and I’m proud of the way it has grown. Taking care of the planet starts with small actions. Let’s go green starting right where we are.”
