On World Mosquito Day, C-Care Uganda, in partnership with Ajanta Pharma, convened clinicians and researchers in Kampala for a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session on the management of severe malaria, bringing together expertise from clinical practice, research and the Ministry of Health to examine how current evidence can strengthen patient care.

With Uganda continuing to carry a significant malaria burden, the session focused on a critical question: are we translating the latest clinical evidence into the decisions made at the bedside?

The discussion was led by Dr. Catherine Maiteki Sebuguzi, Deputy Program Manager, Malaria Elimination Division at the Ministry of Health; Dr. Jane Achan, Principal Advisor and Senior Scientist at the Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration Uganda; and Dr. Pritch Kagera Kabata, Intensivist at C-Care IHK.

They examined current evidence on severe and cerebral malaria and its implications for clinical practice, including the management of cerebral complications in children, the use of interventions such as mannitol and hypertonic saline, the routine preventive use of phenobarbital, and the management of potential bacterial co-infections. The discussion focused on translating current evidence into the clinical decisions that shape patient care at the bedside.

For C-Care, creating opportunities for this kind of clinical exchange is part of its commitment to advancing healthcare through clinical expertise, knowledge sharing and continuous learning.

By bringing together experts from across the healthcare system, C-Care is creating a platform for clinicians to engage with evolving evidence and consider how it should influence practice. As Dr. Juma Fauz Kavuma, Director of Medical Services at C-Care Uganda, noted, the initiative is intended to help close gaps in medical knowledge by creating opportunities for clinicians beyond C-Care’s own teams to engage with current evidence.

Ultimately, the measure of medical education is what happens after the room empties, when knowledge informs the next clinical decision and, potentially, changes a patient’s outcome.

This is where C-Care’s role extends beyond delivering care: creating the conversations, connections and knowledge exchange that help move healthcare practice forward.
