Roland Bish Ndyomugyenyi officially launches Hass Avocado Farming for Economic Empowerment in Rukiga
Rukiga County MP Hon. Roland Bish Ndyomugyenyi has continued to serve the purpose as to why he was given the mandate to represent Rukiga people.
As his nickname goes Mr. Fixer, in a bid to boost household income and engineer economic growth within Rukiga County, Hon. Roland Ndyomugyenyi Bish has officially launched a pioneering campaign advocating for the widespread cultivation of Hass avocados.
The official launch took place on Saturday at Rukiga District Headquarters in Mparo Town Council, witnessed by a number of residents and local leaders as well as implementing partners.
Hon. Ndyomugyenyi underscored the potential of Hass avocado farming as a transformative avenue for prosperity.
He emphasized the economic benefits that could occur from embracing this lucrative crop, citing its high demand both domestically and internationally.
“Hass avocado farming presents a unique opportunity for our community to enhance household income and improve livelihoods,” remarked Hon. Bish. “By tapping into this market, we can create sustainable economic growth and reduce dependency on traditional agricultural practices.”
Mr. Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere, Rukiga District LC5 Chairperson and Zadoki Kamusiime Deputy Resident Commissioner said the initiative not only offers financial incentives but also aligns with broader sustainability goals, including soil conservation and biodiversity enhancement.
They highlighted the significance of such programs in complementing government-led poverty eradication efforts, such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), reflecting Rukiga’s commitment to balanced development and environmental stewardship.
Prof. Pamela Mbabazi, the Chairperson of the National Planning Authority Speaking while officiating at the event emphasized the importance of supporting the implementation of the campaign. She pledged to facilitate access to resources and expertise, including agricultural training and market linkages, while advocating for collaboration between government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and local communities to foster a thriving avocado industry in Rukiga District.
Highlighting the untapped potential of the Kigezi Sub-Region, Professor Mbabazi lamented its classification among the poorest regions in Uganda despite its abundant resources. She urged residents to seize the opportunity presented by Hass avocado farming as a means of poverty eradication and economic empowerment.
“It’s a pity that despite its abundance of resources, Kigezi is ranked among the poorest regions in Uganda. Embracing Hass avocado growing can assist residents in poverty eradication and unlock the region’s economic potential.” She says.
The campaign has generated significant enthusiasm among Rukiga residents, with many expressing eagerness to participate in the initiative. Local farmers have welcomed the prospect of diversifying their agricultural activities, recognizing the promising prospects offered by avocado cultivation.
As momentum continues to build, Rukiga residents are poised to embrace a new era of economic empowerment through avocado farming. With the leadership of Hon. Roland Ndyomugyenyi Bish and the collaborative efforts of the community, Hass avocados are poised to become a symbol of prosperity and progress in the district.
This further boosts chances for Hon. Roland to retain his MP seat come 2026.
