Kyankwazi: President Yoweri Museveni on Saturday met top officials of Airtel Uganda, who briefed him on the company’s recent innovations and undertakings.
The Airtel Group that met the President on the sidelines of the NRM Caucus retreat in Kyankwanzi, comprised the Board Chairman, Mr Hannington Karuhanga, Managing Director V.G Somasekhar and Mr Dennis Kakonge, the legal and regulatory director.
Mr Somasekhar told the president that the company was fully complying with the National Broadband Policy and had in December last year (2019) rolled out a drive to ensure the entire country had Fourth Generation (4G) coverage.
“The 4G services render a speedy and advanced capacity to send video, voice and internet services,” he said. He said 100 percent 4G coverage across the country was a milestone because no other telecom operator in the continent had achieved this.
The officials also requested the President to support their quest for additional spectrum, particularly in sub on gig band of 800/ 900 MHz, to drive their 4G penetration, which Mr Museveni agreed to.
The President also thanked the company for their investments, tax compliance and contribution to the country’s economic growth. Airtel Uganda contributed over Shs500 billion in tax last year.
