MoWT targets Enhancing Rail Safety at Highway Level Crossings

The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) is intensifying efforts to improve safety at railway level crossings following fatal incidents along the rail corridor and in the wake of emerging developments in rail transport.

A joint team led by Mr. Winstone Katushabe, Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety, met with Uganda Railways Corporation [URC] officials to address speeding and non-compliance at crossing points, which are high-risk zones.

The meeting agreed on speed control measures, improved signage, stronger enforcement and accelerated automation of crossings, alongside a targeted public awareness campaign.

A joint technical committee has been formed to coordinate interventions and prioritise high-risk crossings, a move intending to reduce accidents and enhance transport safety.
