Mathias Walukagga has officially joined the race for the Busiro East Member of Parliament position, challenging the long-standing incumbent Hon. Lubega Medard Ssegona.
Addressing rumors and reports claiming he would fail to manage the parliamentary seat, Walukagga dismissed such claims as misinformation. He cited his experience as the former Mayor of Kyengera Town Council and expressed confidence in his ability to serve effectively as MP.
Walukagga also responded to criticism regarding his use of language during the campaign, stating that Luganda is widely spoken in Buganda and Uganda, and he is free to communicate in the local language. He encouraged people to accept linguistic diversity as part of political discourse.
Local activist Nyanzi Martin Luther has publicly criticized the incumbent, Lubega Ssegona, noting that despite representing Busiro East since Nyanzi was eight years old, the constituency has seen little development. Nyanzi also echoed a sentiment that other leaders should be given opportunities to serve.
Supporters of Hon. Lubega Medard Ssegona argue that his legal background, active participation in parliamentary debates, and advocacy for Buganda’s interests make him a valuable and stable leader. They believe his continued presence ensures continuity in governance.
The contest for Busiro East is expected to be competitive with Walukaga’s entry and Nyanzi’s activism adding pressure to the incumbent’s campaign. The election will test whether voters prefer experience and continuity or new leadership.
As campaigns intensify, residents of Busiro East will soon decide on the future direction of their representation in parliament.
