How did Dr Kizza Besigye Disappear from Kenya? All you need to Know
The news about the disappearance of former Forum for Democratic Change president, Rt. Dr. Col. Kizza Besigye has taken the country by surprise. Apparently Besigye last week attended a book launch of former Kenyan presidential candidate, Martha Karua in Nairobi.
However, he hasn’t been seen again since then. The matter was raised on social media platform X formerly Twitter by his wife, Winnie Byanyima. The UNAIDS executive director said that her husband is being detained at a military facility in Kampala. Both his lawyers and family have been denied access to him. Byanyima demanded for the release of her husband from the government because he’s not a military officer.
“I request the govt of Uganda to release my husband Dr Kizza Besigye from where he is being held immediately.
He was kidnapped last Saturday while he was in Nairobi for Hon Martha Karua’s book launch. I am now reliably informed that he is in a military jail in Kampala.
We his family and his lawyers demand to see him. He is not a soldier. Why is he being held in a military jail?” she wrote on her platform.
Other public figures such as NUP president, Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu have also raised their voices on this matter. The former Kyadondo East legislator said that the disappearance of his political comrade is both worrying and a great concern. He pointed out how 36 activists were months ago abducted from Nairobi, brought back to Uganda and put into military detention where they were tortured from.
Kyagulanyi further wrote that “The abduction of Ugandan citizens from Kenya and handing them over to the regime in Uganda without following extradition laws must be condemned by all people of good conscience!”
The self proclaimed People’s President was yesterday produced in the General Court Martial and has been sent on remand to Luzira Prison. This same Court adjourned his case to 2nd December. Besigye is being charged with unlawful possession of two pistols alongside other ammunition.
“Dr. Kizza Besigye has been remanded to Luzira Prison as the General Court Martial adjourns his case to December 2, 2024″.
He was charged with unlawful possession of two pistols and ammunition alongside his comrade Hajji Obeid Lutale.”
