Here is Mpanga, the Ugandan who delivered a poem at the Prince Harry-Markel Royal Wedding

With every global event, we always try to find out how attached our country is, just to relate. Since yesterday, the entire world has been keeping tabs on the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markel. The glamorous wedding involved our own George Mpanga who delivered a poem for the couple.

George the Poet, real names George Mpanga, is a Ugandan poet, formerly a rapper. He appeared on the BBC One’s LIVE coverage of the royal wedding yesterday at 9:00am and he opened the event with his poem to the couple.

Mpanga also briefly talked about his background and his role as the Sentebale ambassador. Sentebale is a charity organisation which was founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso in 2006 i Lesotho. It focuses on efforts to help reduce stigma around HIV among the youths in the southern African country.

A musician who turned to poetry, George Mpanga was born to Ugandan parents Edith and Kato Mpanga in Harlesden, north-west London. He started music at an early age of 15, performing rap music. He studied politics, psychology and Sociology at King’s College London and Cambridge University.

Mpanga’s poem was met with compliments and praises from many media personalities including Irene Hitchcock who referred to it as such a powerful poem. She said;

Oh Georgie. I love you honey. This is powerful. Now go and explain everything else to the world. We need your poetry.

Mpanga is someone we can all be proud of.
