The government has banned live broadcast of defiance campaign by the main opposition party Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). Below is the statement from government concerning the campaign ban;
As you may be aware, last week, the Constitutional Court issued an Interim Order halting the acrimonious activities of the so-called “Defiance Campaign”. The “campaign” is apparently organized by opposition groups led by the FDC Flag Bearer in the recently concluded Presidential Elections, Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Continuation of this so-called “defiance campaign” is illegal because it is in clear breach of the Interim Court Order issued last week. Dr. Besigye himself has asserted that his defiance is intended to fail the swearing-in of Uganda’s President-elect, H.E. Y.K. Museveni.
This goes against the will of the majority of our electorate who voted for H.E. Y.K. Museveni. Such action also violates the recent Supreme Court ruling which re-affirmed H.E. Y.K. Musevenias the duly elected President of Uganda.
Government feels that since the electioneering season is now over, there is need for our people to return to work and production. Besides, in the past, such unlawful and acrimonious actions have disrupted business and put the lives of our people – including journalists, at risk.
Therefore, at its sitting yesterday, Cabinet directed the Police to ensure that the Interim Order issued by the Constitutional Court against the “Defiance Campaign” is strictly adhered to.
Cabinet also directed that ALL live broadcast media coverage of the activities of the “Defiance Campaign” organized by Dr. Kizza Besigye and his cohorts should stop forth-with. Any media houses that continue offering live coverage of the so-called “Defiance Campaign” risk having their broadcasting licenses revoked.
