Don’t Miss the 89th Academy Awards Ceremony On DStv This Weekend

And the Oscar goes to…

All that Glitters, will be gold come this Sunday, 26th February 2017 when members of the entertainment community witness which one of their favourite actors or actresses walk away with the coveted Oscar Award Live on M-Net. Jimmy Kimmel, host of the Late Night show will take center stage as the host of the 89th Academy awards to honor the best films of 2016 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Following the controversy of the 2016 Oscar awards the Academy hopes that the comedian will bring back much needed freshness and savvy of the awards.

This year’s awards has 6 African American (black) nominees following boycotts and calls of discrimination at last year’s awards. Denzel Washington leads the pack with eight nominations, (seven for acting and one for best picture) for his role in Fences.

During the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences will present Academy Awards (commonly referred to as Oscars) in 24 categories.

The nominations include:

  1. Best Picture – Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight.
  1. Best Actress – Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving), Natalie Portman (Jackie), Emma Stone (La La Land), Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins)
  1. Best Actor – Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic), Denzel Washington (Fences)
  1. Best Supporting Actress – Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Nicole Kidman (Lion), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea)
  1. Best Supporting Actor- Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Dev Patel (Lion), Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals)
  1. Best Director – Denis Villeneuve (Arrival), Mel Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge), Damien Chazelle (La La Land), Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea), Barry Jenkins

  1. Best Animated Feature Film – Moana, Kubo and the Two Strings, My Life as a Zucchini, The Red Turtle, Zootopia
