  • Can The Old Guards In Acholi Survive The Young Youths?

Can The Old Guards In Acholi Survive The Young Youths?

The past two months have seen the Acholi sub region experience heated political environment and activities in preparation for 2016 due to the relative calm and return of peace in the region.

However, political analysts predict a wild wind of political change in the sub region. The most scared and have been spending sleepless nights have been the old guard who now face a new breed of politicians who have been under pressure from their electorates to stand and create a different brand of political attitude in the sub region.

Many view the old guard as greatly unreliable and were largely entrepreneurs of conflict and have served so long without any visible sign of development in their constituencies. Among incumbents who have become regulars in their constituencies and are trying to find survival means are, Hon. Jacob Oulanya the Deputy Speaker who faces an uphill battle retaining his Omoro county seat.

Reagan Okumu of Acwa who has served for long as MP and many now view as a future liability, Christopher Acire of Gulu municipality whose anti stand regarding the anti gay bill has made him less popular , Hon, Richard Todwong in Nwoya, Gilbert Olanya of Kilak county.
Below is the list of youths expected to make a political drive in the Acholi sub region come 2016.

1.Hon. Todwong Richard,Minister without portfolio and Ag. Secretary General of NRM and MP Nwoya.
At national level he has done well mobilizing for the ruling party and getting himself promoted within the shortest time to hold different offices both in government and his ruling NRM party. His biggest undoing will be explaining to his electorate his role in the Mbabazi sacking, his silence over the Amuru land giveaways, his brother Brigadier Otema Awany’s alleged involvement in Human Rights violation during the insurgency might still resurface to haunt his ambitions and continuous land wrangles between his family and other people in Nwoya. However, many analysts believe he will retain the seat but with lots of hardship.

    Todwong RichardTodwong Richard

    2. Awany Tony. Currently working for the office of the President.
He is one of the most gifted orators of his generation who extremely excelled at university and is remembered as one of those on whom northern Ugandan security relied upon during the insurgence, In the last election he was narrowly defeated in the NRM primaries by his cousin Richard Todwong in an election many of his supporters believe was full of intimidation and voter bribery. This time round many people await his return and is best viewed as the person Todwong will sweat plasma to beat. His biggest low is the string of women and kids his had with them .

    3. Mwaka Emmanuel Lutukumoi. Deputy RDC LIRA and former DP spokesperson.
He quit DP after his own President Norbert Mao chose to support Christopher Acire for the Gulu municipality seat. Many believe with the current political turn of events,Mwaka would have won the seat with a landslide victory had he stayed with DP and maintained his NGO which provided shelter to displace children during the insurgency. He commands strong respect among the elderly people. His biggest low will be the Mao factor, his unprecedented divorce from his Japanese wife and his deployment in Lira instead of Gulu.

    4. Akena Andrew Okullu. City Tycoon, Educationist, Aid worker and Medic.
Much as he has denied any interests in politics, his frequent visits to the region and the sudden philanthropy to women, youths groups and health centers suggest otherwise, many analysts believe the coming in of Akena into politics would actually change the economic status of politics in Acholi sub region. He is an ardent admirer and promoter of President Museveni’s economic and agricultural policies in the region especially rural electrification and NAADS. However ,his poor command of the Acholi language and continuous debate of his source of wealth could easily be his biggest undoing also his past involvement in dirty businesses , and people involved in corruption scandals, arrogance and analysts believe he might fall victim to voter bribery.

    5. Ojara Martin Mapenduzi. Gulu LC V.
He has excelled as one of the best Local council leaders in the country. But his decision to announce his candidature for the Gulu municipality seat, brings in the biggest threat to Christopher Acire the incumbent MP for the Municipality. He is a good orator and mobiliser for his party FDC.His biggest undoing is the persistent accusations of his involvement in corruption.

    6. Okello Oryem Alfred. City Lawyer and businessman
He is more known as an excellent lawyer with one of the most brilliant minds remembered for his role in the Bad black case, Bamugemereirwe tribunal and seats as Legal officer on many boards. little is known about his political abilities. However, word is clear that he intends to stand for MP come 2016.His only undoing is his involvement with a TV presenter turned actor which is threatening to break his marriage and many believe the Lukwago ghost could resurface to destroy his ambitions.

    7. Owor Arthur aka Big Spender. Senior lecturer and Reseacher.
He is one of the brightest brains of his generation in Northern Uganda. Like Ojara Martin Mapenduzi and Akena Andrew okullu, their first political abilities were revealed during their political analytical show in 2005 on a local fm station. Many believe, he could easily take the municipality seat due to his vast youth support base. His biggest undoing could be a lack of a Militant nature which is a special ingredient for politics in the region.

    8. Komakech Lyandro,Senior Lecturer and Researcher and Former UYD president
He is the most experienced of the group and has virtually mentored all the above. Many believe it is just unfortunate that luck has eluded him. He is an ardent leader and supporter of the Democratic Party and many believe he would trounce any opponent if he stood outside the municipality the Mao factor could see Komakech finally realize his dream.

UNICEF And WHO Support Government’s Awareness And Surveillance Efforts Against Marburg

The Government and partners have stepped up efforts to combat Marburg, a deadly viral hemorrhagic fever.

Through the Ministry of Health, partners like UNICEF and WHO are responding to the outbreak by supporting areas of social mobilisation geared towards creating more awareness about the disease, technical assistance as well as logistical support for contact tracing.Catherine Ntabadde of UNICEFCatherine Ntabadde of UNICEF

The Director General Health Services, Ministry of Health, Dr. Jane Aceng says government is engaging various partners to support in areas of their comparative advantage and expertise. She adds that partners have been assigned to various sub committees which feed into the National Task Force chaired by the Ministry of Health.

As a member of the Ministry of Health Social Mobilisation task force, UNICEF and WHO will run a countrywide media campaign to sensitise the masses on the dangers and precautionary measures to take.

“We are providing technical expertise and financial support to ensure that messaging is directed through the mass media, social networks as well as use of Information Education and Communication (IEC) materials,” Aida Girma, UNICEF Representative noted.

According to World Health Organisation, Marburg virus causes the Marburg haemorrhagic fever. The virus belongs to the same family of viruses as Ebola and is highly contagious.

“WHO is providing technical support and has deployed a team of experts from the WHO Regional Office to support national and district response,” said Dr. Fisseha Solomon, Medical Officer, Disaster Preparedness.

UNICEF has also committed to provide technical support in the area of training health workers to equip them with the right information and knowledge about the disease.

Sean Blaschke, UNICEF Health Specialist says it is critical to ensure health workers’ safety and this can be realised through the provision of information to the teams on their roles in term of examining the suspected cases.

“At this stage, contact tracing and isolation is our number one priority. Early triage is very important,” he explains. Blaschke has just returned from Liberia where UNICEF is supporting the Liberian government fight the Ebola epidemic.

In addition, the agencies will play a key role in strengthening surveillance at both community and facility level through mTrac, (a UNICEF innovation) that supports Ministry of Health in nationwide disease surveillance and medicine tracking system to over 20,000 health workers at all 3,500 government health facilities.

Through mTrac, UNICEF and WHO will undertake messaging to all health workers in at-risk districts a scheduled set of updates and messages via SMS on Marburg transmission routes, disease control and prevention; Introduce surveys via SMS messages to all health workers in at-risks districts targeting health worker preparedness and safety – this includes training, heath workforce / staffing levels, supplies like Personal Protection Equipment; Establish a complementary SMS “alert” system to complement the existing notifiable disease reporting protocols, which would be immediately forwarded to the District Health Office for tracking and follow-up; Ensure all U-reporters in affected areas receive some basic information on prevention and protection of Marburg, and requested to look out for suspected cases; Support registration of beneficiaries of UNICEF supplies who have mobile phones at point of delivery and dispatching of targeted information via SMS on utilization of the supplies.

    Symptoms

People with Marburg experience fever, headache and muscle pain. Five days later, a rash across the chest, back and stomach may be observed. Nausea, vomiting, chest pain, sore throat, abdominal pain and diarrhoea may also occur.

    How it is spread?

Marburg is spread when one gets in contact with body fluids like blood, vomitus of those affected.

Since the reported outbreak of Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever on 30September 2014 only one case was confirmed following laboratory tests done at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI). The index case is a 30-year-old male Radiographer, who originally was working in Mpigi District Health Centre IV (HCIV), Mpigi Town Council as Radiographer but had been recruited by Church of Uganda founded Mengo Hospital – a Private not for Profit (two months ago). He started feeling unwell on 17September 2014 while on duty at Mengo Hospital and travelled back to Mpigi Health Centre IV on 18September 2014 to seek treatment since he felt more comfortable with a facility that he had worked with for a long time and had friends to take care of him while under medication.

Ministry of Health puts the number of contact cases to 109 as of 7October 2014. Blood samples of 12 suspected cases including the brother of the deceased that had shown symptoms of the disease, turned out negative. However, another sample will be removed to enable Uganda Virus Research Institute conduct another confirmatory test.

Anne Kansiime Named Uganda’s Top Celebrity As The New Vision Lists 100 Uganda’s top celebrities

Funny woman Anne Kansiime was named Uganda’s top celebrity by a local daily The New Vision. The daily print paper yesterday in its issue named Uganda’s top 100 celebrities but many have come out to criticise the list saying it was not right.Anne Kansiime has topped the list of 100 Ugandan celebrities

Anne Kansiime has topped the list of 100 Ugandan celebrities

    Anne Kansiime

According to The New Vision Anne’s hundreds of video clips on You Tube made her one of the most loved comedians in the country, and that has made Anne Kansiime jump to the top of this year’s Top 100 Celebrities, as released by the paper yesterday. It was largely her very strong presence on social media that tipped the numbers into her favour.

In previous rankings New Vision used mainly the number of media mentions a person had in 12 months, but this year combined media mentions with Facebook and twitter presence, and came up with a more realistic measure of fame.
That meant that athletes, who dominated last year’s rankings, were relegated to mid table as they are yet to become very active on social media, although they generally led on media mentions.
Eight of the top 10 celebrities were musicians, with Kansiime, a comedian, and Mariam Ndagire the veteran actress the only two that were not. Eight of the top 10 celebrities are musicians.Angella KatatumbaAngella Katatumba

A big surprise was Angella Katatumba, who came in at number 2, again showing the strength of social media presence. Her Facebook page has over 300,000 likes and counting, while Bobi Wine only has 30,000 likes. There were 5 women in the top 10, including rapper Keko who, while not having many media mentions and not many Facebook likes, nevertheless had the most Twitter followers among the top 100 with almost 40,000.Flavia Tumusiime

    Flavia Tumusiime

Flavia Tumusiime was the highest rated radio presenter at number 13, while gossip queen Mary Luswata was the highest ranked TV presenter at 18. Frank and Sheila Gashumba made a father-child presence, while Zari Hussein beat out fellow socialite Judith Heard by 2 places (29 to 30).
Olympic and World Marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich was the highest ranked athlete at 35, with just 10,000 Facebook likes and only 100 followers on Twitter.

    Jose Chameleone
Now New York-based Africa’s Next Top Model winner Aamoti topped the fashion fraternity, coming in at 43, while fashion designers Sylvia Owori (45) and Brenda Maraka (71) also featured.

  • ‘WHY COMEDY NEARLY DIED’

    ‘WHY COMEDY NEARLY DIED’

    The Inconvenient Truth

Started in the middle of 2009, Standup Comedy is nearly five years old in Uganda.Laftaz Comedians Laftaz Comedians

Five years ago it was new and exciting. It even managed to break the dominance of music on TV and Drama in the theatres with comedy being included in the two entertainment genres. The young industry got unavoidable attention and soon became a money-minting and career-making venture. ***Kaboom*** the Calamity struck.

Comedians became overnight celebrities of sorts, every promoter came after comedians, every bar started a comedy night, and every radio station came after the comedians.

Comedy became littered all over Kampala with little or no innovation.

The comedians abandoned creativity, repeated jokes, pirated jokes, became vulgar and Comedy as an industry suffered.

The patient Ugandan audience got disappointed seeing the same jokes on stage almost every week. They took off, they gave up, they resorted to other things.

Any ‘innovation’ that was introduced was not actually an innovation but rather giving a show a different name and then doing the same thing the audience ran away from.

The media cried out. Sometimes it went overboard in its criticism but there was something constructive that we the comedians ignored. The audience read the media stories, believed them and disassociated from comedy. It wasn’t their problem; they simply made a choice, to see the same old stuff repackaged or to just ignore.

However, Standup Comedy is not dead. It is very much alive. The top comedians like the Pablos, Prince Ehmahs, Idringis, Amootis of this world as still making some bucks from it and it funds almost their entire livelihood.

There just needs to be a total overhaul, a whole shift from everything old to something new.

    For a change to be seen, the following must happen;

1-   Comedians can not perform week in week out on the same stage. Comedy needs research and there ought to be enough time for a comedian to research before hitting the stage again. This will eliminate the issue of repetition and burn-out.

2-   The business of having ten (10) comedians perform on one stage on a given night is outdated. It helps comedians ‘hide’ behind others and their weak performances are covered up by the brilliance of another comedian on the night. So this will help weed out substandard performances, encourage research and improve the comedians.

3-   Show organizers should be organized. The Premier League is interesting because you wait a full week to watch a match. If soccer was played everyday, it wouldn’t be this interesting. The same goes for comedy. Having comedy nights on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday…all the way to Sunday using the same comedians has created unnecessary monotony, repetition and made it less attractive in the eyes of the audience. The Krackers perform alongside Bebe Cool at La BonitaThe Krackers perform alongside Bebe Cool at La Bonita

    THE WAY FORWARD

In regard, I and my team at Laftaz have resolved to lead this Comedy Revolution and bring life into comedy, making it attractive to the audience and give the sponsors value for their sponsorship. This is what is going to happen.

Laftaz Comedy Lounge has introduced a style of presentation that is used in the USA, Nigeria, South Africa and many countries with a strong comedy industry.

Every comedian shall have his night where he is the main act (performing for 30-45 minutes) with jokes he has researched and perfected for over a month. He will have a host and an opening act and a live band to spice up the show.

He will then proceed with that ‘package’ to Laftaz (Jinja Branch), Mbale and Mbarara in some sort of ‘regional tour) It will be a month or two before that comedian returns to the stage in Kampala again after enough research and perfection.

There will also be International African comedians hosted, for purposes of giving the audience a different flavour and helping the young comedians learn from the seasoned professionals

This will help curb vulgarity, repetition, and substandard performances.

Let’s face it, Standup Comedy in its current format will not sell no matter how much it is advertised, whether it is held at Laftaz, Serena, La Bonita, Namugongo Matyrs Shrine or Gaddafi Mosque, it just needs a new format. Professionalizing it is the only way to go and this will surely bring the audience back, bring life into comedy, attract the sponsors once again and take the industry to an international level.

    Yours

    Prince Ehmah

The likes of Juliana Kanyomozi, Iryn, Chameleone should step aside and give way to these stars who are truly proving that music is now their game. They are already attracting high profiles personalities to perform for them, companies, social functions, and high-end music shows. Here are Uganda’s young singers to watch in the next few years.

Fyonna NsubugaFyonnaShe came to fame when she sang the National anthems of both Uganda Cranes Vs Congo Braille at Namboole in 2012.
