Boda bodas required to carry identification cards and QR code to operate in Kampala
New strict and tough measures have been introduce by the Ministry of Works and Transport in a bid to regulate the Boda Boda business in Kampala and the entire country. A meeting held on the 27th of November between the Ministry of Works and motorcycle assembling companies, dealers and financiers deliberated on a number of key issues.
Some of these include non sale of motorcycles if there are no helmets. A motorcycle will have to leave a dealership with two mandatory helmets.
“All motorcycle sales to include 2 standard helmets for the rider and the passenger,” part of the communication read.
The statement also added that the standardization of helmets already exists as per the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS). These standards have to be upheld and followed for any motorcycle to be registered.
Apparently, this move is aimed at streamlining the Boda Boda business. It’s also geared at restoration of sanity on roads in the country. The statement also read that the Boda Boda cyclists in Greater Kampala will be required to possess identification. These include uniform identifier reflector jackets.
Additionally, these jackets will include the photo, name plus contacts of the cyclist. There will also be a QR code. Furthermore the jackets will be worn according to the different divisions in the city. The Ministry’s communique also read that these details will be synching with the information of the motorcycle being ridden such as the number plate under which it is registered.
Some of the identifier jackets as per the divisions will be as follows:-
“Pink-Kampala Central
Dark blue -Makindye
Forest Green-Nakawa” as per the information from the ministry.
