Uganda’s number one Tabloid newspaper The Red Pepper is back on the streets after two months. The newspaper and its sister publications were sealed off by Uganda Police after the Red Pepper published a story with the headline ‘M7 Plots to overthrow Paul Kagame’ on November 20th 2017.
After the story, the company’s five directors and three senior editors were arrested and detained at the infamous Nalufenya Dentition centre for a week before they were charged in court for publishing information prejudicial to the security and remanded to Luzira prisons for a month.
They were released on December 19th and since then, they have been engaging government over the re-opening of the paper. Last week, directors; Richard Tusiime, Johnson Musinguzi, Patrick Mugumya, James Mujuni and Arinaitwe Rugyendo together with editor Ben Byarabaha, Tumusiime Francis and Richard Kintu met President Yoweri Museveni who agreed and ordered for the re-opening of the paper after a length discussion with the 8 managers. The paper has released their first publication in two months today 29th January with the headline ‘Our Story’.
