Kampala: Ugandan music producer Keilor Pro, also known as Abu Spohian, has voiced concern over a growing trend in the music industry where artists fail to fully pay for studio services.
Speaking in a recent interview, Keilor Pro revealed that many musicians either pay only a portion of the agreed fee or default entirely after receiving their projects. “Some artists pay a half or even a quarter and disappear. It affects us because we invest time, equipment, and skills expecting full payment,” he said.
The producer emphasized that this practice is not only demoralizing but also limits the growth of producers in Uganda’s competitive entertainment industry. He added that the lack of formal contracts between producers and artists makes it easy for such cases to go unresolved.
Keilor, who has worked with both upcoming and established artists, called for more professionalism in the industry. “We need to treat music as a business. If an artist values the work, they should be willing to pay fully,” he noted.
He also encouraged fellow producers to start drafting written agreements before beginning projects to avoid misunderstandings.As Uganda’s music scene continues to expand, concerns over fair compensation and professionalism are becoming central to conversations in the creative sector.
