#40Days40FinTechs Zambia and Malawi Edition – Day 33
SpendSaver, a Malawian FinTech start-up, is tackling one of the biggest barriers facing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Africa—lack of structured financial records.
With over 70% of small businesses in Malawi operating without formal bookkeeping, many struggle to access loans, attract investors, or make informed financial decisions. This gap often leads to poor cash flow management and the early collapse of otherwise promising ventures.

SpendSaver is changing this narrative through a user-friendly mobile platform that automates revenue and expense tracking. “Most MSMEs shy away from financial recordkeeping because of the manual process and the complexity of existing tools,” said Charity Kampanje, CEO of SpendSaver. “Our solution offers automated reports and real-time tracking, available on both a mobile app and USSD to cater to users with basic phones.”
The platform also integrates with mobile money services, making it even more accessible for MSMEs operating in the informal sector.
SpendSaver’s innovation was further refined during the 2025 COMESA Women in FinTech Hackathon for Zambia and Malawi, where the team received mentorship on product development, legal frameworks, and inclusive digital finance principles like those of the Level One Project.

“We are grateful to COMESA Business Council, HiPipo, and the Gates Foundation for the invaluable training and support,” Kampanje added.
SpendSaver featured on Day 33 of the 40 Days 40 FinTechs initiative, which highlights digital innovators transforming finance across Africa.

The initiative, now expanded to Zambia and Malawi, continues to promote financial inclusion by spotlighting scalable solutions and connecting FinTechs with resources like Level One Project guidelines, Mojaloop Open Source Software and Inclusive Finance systems, etc.
