As the gig economy continues to gain momentum globally, Zambia is witnessing its own digital freelancing wave thanks to Skille Technologies a pioneering FinTech platform that connects skilled freelancers with clients seeking short-term digital services.
Founded with the vision to streamline access to vetted digital professionals, Skille Technologies serves as a trusted online marketplace for services ranging from website development to influencer marketing, graphic design, and more. According to co-founder Kabwe Chama Nkandu, the platform ensures both quality and accountability by vetting all freelancers before listing them.
“Clients simply visit the platform, browse available services, and select from our pool of verified freelancers. Once a job is agreed upon, payment is made through Skille and only released after the service is satisfactorily completed,” Nkandu explained.
This escrow-style system offers peace of mind to clients while also creating a structured earning environment for freelancers. To access jobs, freelancers must subscribe to the platform — a system that helps maintain professionalism and filters out unqualified service providers.
Still, the path hasn’t been without hurdles. Nkandu noted that many users remain hesitant about digital payments, with some freelancers preferring direct cash transactions. “We do our best to manage all communications within the platform to minimize risks, but off-platform dealings remain a challenge we are addressing,” she said.
Despite these challenges, Skille is contributing significantly to Zambia’s evolving digital economy by building trust and fostering digital literacy within the freelance space. Its secure system empowers users on both sides entrepreneurs needing reliable digital services and freelancers seeking stable, short-term gigs.
Skille Technologies was featured on Day 23 of the #40Days40FinTechs Zambia and Malawi edition — a regional expansion of the successful East African initiative led by HiPipo. The initiative has spotlighted over 200 FinTech stories across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, promoting financial inclusion and innovation across the continent.
