The opening match of the new campaign sees champions Manchester City open the defence of their title with a clash away to Burnley at Turf Moor on Friday night – a clash made all the more intriguing by the fact that the Clarets have former Citizens captain Vincent Kompany as their manager.
“We all know every match this season is massive but for the reigning champions of the Championship to face the Premier League champions feels like the perfect curtain raiser!” said Kompany.

“We aim to continue this season as we finished the last: doing everything we can to make our fans happy. It’s great we can start the Premier League campaign in front of our own fans with a home match.”
Saturday opens with Arsenal taking on Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium, with the pick of the day’s action coming from St James Park in the evening, when Newcastle United welcome Aston Villa for a battle of two ambitious teams looking to challenge the established hierarchy.
“Of course, last year we were very happy with the work we did, and now, this year we have to add some different goals and some different players,” said Villa manager Unai Emery.
Sunday features a London derby between Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur, followed by a heavyweight clash between Chelsea and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Both teams underperformed last season and will be desperate to make a statement in this opening weekend.
“The transfer window is open. If my day would have 28 hours at the moment it would not be a problem – I could fill them easily!” said Reds boss Jurgen Klopp. “With all the things you have to do left and right, my main focus and energy has to go into the training sessions then that’s what I do. Then either side of the sessions I can try to help with other stuff.”
The opening round of the season closes out on Monday night with Manchester United, set to feature new Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana, taking on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.
SuperSport is the only place where you can get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where the pick of matches for this opening round of the season sees Athletic Bilbao play host to Real Madrid at San Mames Barria on Saturday night.
Los Blancos, after the disappointment of relinquishing their La Liga title to arch rivals Barcelona last season, come into the new campaign minus a world-class striker following the departure of Karim Benzema. Yet manager Carlo Ancelotti believes his team has “improved” with the additions of Jude Bellingham, Joselu, Fran Garcia and Arda Guler.
“We are very happy. [The players that] have arrived improve the quality of the squad. Fran Garcia improves the left back spot, where we had problems last season. With Joselu, we have more aerial threat, where we also suffered. Guler is very talented. He is very young, and I think the fans will enjoy him.
“Bellingham has great qualities with something we don’t have in the team: the ability to arrive in the box. The squad has improved. I want to try something new. If it doesn’t work out, we have the old system, which gave us so many successes.”
Champions Barcelona will open the defence of their title away to Getafe on Sunday night. The Blaugrana have boosted their squad with the addition of Ilkay Gundogan, and the former Manchester City star is happy to play whatever role manager Xavi sees fit for him.
“It’s strange because, even in the past, I have changed positions from time to time,” said Gundogan. “Specifically, in the last two years I’ve played in a more attacking role, getting closer to the opposition box, creating play, scoring goals… which is unbelievably fun. But I remember, in particular, one season I played as a midfielder, as a number ‘6’, alone, just me. In the last 15, 16, 17 games in the same position and I enjoyed it, I loved it.
“It was an amazing time in a totally different position. So I think it’s a question of interpretation. I’m comfortable playing more offensively, but I think it’s more a matter of what you do out of position and wherever the coach needs you. I’m ready to play anywhere. Because I think I’ve shown in the past that I can play defensively and offensively as well.”
The opening round of La Liga starts off on Friday evening with Almeria at home to Rayo Vallecano and is followed by Valencia visiting Sevilla, while the final match of the sequence arrives on Monday night with Atletico Madrid playing host to Granada.
