Celebrating Pearl Magic’s Six Years of Spotlighting Uganda’s Creative Talent
In a country rich with culture and creative talent, M-Net’s Pearl Magic has become a powerhouse in showcasing Uganda’s entertainment industry. This October marks six extraordinary years since the channel launched, delivering 100% local content on both DStv and GOtv. From thrilling dramas and heartfelt comedies to music and reality TV, Pearl Magic has solidified its place as the ultimate platform for Ugandan entertainment.
Over the years, the channel has introduced Ugandans to hit shows like Mizigo Express, Mistakes Girls Do, The Hostel, Sanyu, Prestige, Damalie, Junior’s Drama Club (JDC), Urban Life, Popi and Beloved among others, captivating audiences with their authentic storytelling. As Pearl Magic celebrates this milestone, it continues to expand its offerings, cementing its role in shaping Uganda’s creative landscape.
Reflecting on Pearl Magic’s journey, Rinaldi Jamugisa, PR and Communications Manager at MultiChoice Uganda, shared his excitement: “Right from the onset, Pearl Magic’s mission has been to elevate Ugandan talent and culture. We’ve seen the demand and interest for quality home-grown content grow, and the response from subscribers and viewers has been incredible.”
Jamugisa emphasized the channel’s role in nurturing local talent. “At MultiChoice, we believe in the power of raw, authentic, and high-quality storytelling. Pearl Magic has become a platform for Ugandan creators to showcase their work, and this milestone is about celebrating the people behind the stories—our actors, directors, writers, crew, and producers—the entire ecosystem.”
Margaret Mathore, Channel Head at M-Net, added, “Pearl Magic has transformed the entertainment landscape in Uganda. We are dedicated to amplifying local voices and ensuring that our stories reach audiences far and wide. This celebration is not just about our past; it’s a launchpad for an even more dynamic future.”
This year, Pearl Magic continues its mission with the return of popular shows like the recently concluded first season of Kampala Crème, which has already made waves with its fresh take on life in Uganda’s capital.
Shows like Sanyu and Prestige, which both surpassed 500 episodes—with Sanyu going up to 880 episodes—are a testament to the channel’s longevity. “These dramas are so relatable, and that’s what keeps viewers coming back episode after episode,” Jamugisa highlighted.
For viewers like Desire Akampa, Pearl Magic has become a staple in their daily lives. “I started watching during the COVID-19 lockdown, and the quality of the shows blew me away. They really reflect our Ugandan stories, and I’m proud to see our talent on screen,” Akampa shared.
Beyond the screen, Pearl Magic has also played a significant role in supporting Uganda’s creative economy. By showcasing tens of series and movies and hosting over 20 masterclasses, the channel has created countless opportunities for actors, filmmakers, and production crews, helping to propel Uganda’s entertainment industry forward.
GOtv customer Patricia Adong echoed the sentiment, saying, “Before I discovered Pearl Magic, I was hooked on international content. But after watching Mizigo Express, I was hooked on Ugandan shows. The humour, the characters—it all feels so real. Now, I don’t miss a single episode!”
As Pearl Magic celebrates six remarkable years, the channel’s impact and success signal a bright future for Ugandan storytelling. Looking ahead, Jamugisa hinted at even more exciting developments: “With increased investment in local content through Mnet and the expansion of our platforms like Pearl Magic Prime, we’re only just beginning. Uganda’s stories will continue to take centre stage, not just here at home, but around the world.”
Uganda’s creative talent is ready for the spotlight, and as global interest in African content grows, Pearl Magic remains committed to telling Uganda’s unique stories across platforms including DStv, GOtv, and Showmax.
