Celebrated Filmmaker Daphne Ampire Karema Unveils Riveting TV Series “Borders” in Glittering Premiere
Renowned filmmaker Daphne Ampire Karema, boasting a decade of success in the industry, captivated audiences as she premiered her latest masterpiece, “Borders,” a compelling 15-episode mini-TV series, at Motiv–Bugolobi.
“Borders” intricately weaves the tale of an African Jewel Dance Troop, delving into their daily struggles as both artists and individuals. The multilingual narrative, beautifully presented in English, Luganda, and Swahili, provides viewers with a diverse cultural experience.
During the premiere, Karema acknowledged the challenges of filmmaking, expressing gratitude to sponsors like UCC for their crucial support, which directly impacted the series’ quality.
In a heartfelt message to the State Minister for Trade, present at the event, Karema urged the establishment of credibility for Uganda as the Pearl of Africa. She emphasized the potential to export not just coffee but also films, sharing the nation’s ideals on an international stage.
Daphne Ampire Karema passionately stated, “Just as we export coffee, we have the opportunity to export our movies and share our ideals with the rest of the world.”
State Minister of Trade, Ms. Ntabazi Harriet, echoed this sentiment, encouraging filmmakers to step out of their comfort zones for societal change. She pledged government support for filmmakers who unite as cooperatives, offering financial assistance and other forms of aid.

Hon. Ntabazi Harriet, herself a former filmmaker turned politician, stressed the importance of being heard, asserting, “No one will ever remember or know your existence if you are not seen or heard of.” Her words reflected the transformative power of cinema in shaping societal perspectives.
