  • Maleek Berry gives fans early Christmas gift at Blankets and Wine

Maleek Berry gives fans early Christmas gift at Blankets and Wine

Sunday’s Blankets and Wine event was the last of 2018, and for the thousands of fans inattendance, perhaps a case of saving the best for last.

The year’s final instalment of the picnic-style music festival featured British-Nigerian star Maleek Berry as the headline act, and the record producer and artiste would go on to present Ugandan Afro-beat music fans with the perfect Christmas gift.

Appearing on stage minutes after 8pm at the Lugogo Cricket Oval, the West African entertainer immediately had fans “in the zone” with teasers of some of his finest songs such Kontrol, as well as a host of other tracks he has worked on with prominent artistes including Wizkid, Davido, Wale, Fuse ODG, Runtown and Iyanya among others.

For revelers who had begun strolling through the gates as early as 2pm, this was well worth the wait.

As the Tusker Malt flowed, so did the food and fun, with mats and blankets set outand fans making merry as they enjoyed performances by Mr.Mankwa, Farouq Farouq, Tamba and songstress Irene Ntale, who formed the cast of local artistes lined up to curtain raise for the main performer of the day—Maleek Berry.

When the British-Nigerian’s turn came, he did not disappoint.

Exuding energy, his electric performance instantly had revelers singing and dancing along to songs like Kontrol, Been Calling and The Matter, many of which were sampled off his latest Afro-beat album, “Last Daze of Summer.”

For those who had turned up at the Cricket Oval for one last Blankets and Wine show for 2018, this was a Christmas gift presented early.

“We are proud that for another year we were part of an event that is undeniably the most popular get-together for friends. This edition was even more special because it kicked off the party this festive season and there is no better way to party than with Tusker Malt and authentic African music,” said Cathy Twesigye, UBL Brand Manager, Premium Beers.

  • Rapper Lagum to make his debut at Blankets and Wine Kampala XVIII

Rapper Lagum to make his debut at Blankets and Wine Kampala XVIII

Talented rapper and producer Lagum aka Lagum Owor will be making his debut at the 18th edition of the Tusker Malt Lager powered and House of Deejays organized Blankets and Wine Kampala.

The rapper who has been behind some music hits such as ‘100’ where he featured Ruyonga and Tucker HD as well as ‘Real’ which also featured Ruyonga will be looking to thrill the crowd come 20th August at the Lugogo Cricket Oval.

Lagum, whose music style is a fusion of trap and RnB, makes a blend of music called ‘Alternative Rap’. He will be sharing a stage with Nigerian sensation Seyi Shay alongside some Uganda stars such as; Joel Sebunjo, Rabadaba, T Bro, General Czar’bu and Shifah Musisi. Also performing will be Burkina Faso’s pop star Alif Naaba.

In an effort to deliver on their promise of 100% awesome musical experiences, Tusker Malt Lager and House of Deejays will continue to provide the best musical experience at Blankets and Wine Kampala.

We caught up with the ‘Social Lives’ album star who hopes to be one of the best producers in Africa and asked him a few questions ahead of this week’s event.

Qn: What inspired Lagum to start rapping?

I think I was first influenced by one of my favorite rappers, Lupe fiasco. When I started listening to him I was really taken by rap and started to write my own rhymes to his songs. That was in 2009 and here we are!

Qn: What would you describe your music as?

Whenever people ask me this question, I really struggle to answer it. The best way I can put it is my musical style is a fusion of trap, RnB, and a bunch of other sounds. I’d call it Alternative rap music but I have no idea what that means right now!

Qn: What inspired your ‘Social Lives’ album?

Well Social Lives was inspired by the fact that a lot of people are fake online. Essentially the album is about being who you are and not worrying about what people think. That was the goal when I released it in 2015.

Qn: What are some of your most memorable stage performances?

My most memorable stage performances were at A Ka Dope first Friday and A Ka Dope weekend. The energy the crowd has is incredible and I’m a guy who feeds of that energy. I like to move around and get hyped but I also enjoy being able to bring an audience to a quiet, stand still moment with a song. When I can do both in one set, then that’s a great performance.

Qn: Are there any particular Ugandan artists you would wish to work with?

JC Muyonjo and Solome Basuuta are high up on that list. I’d love to do a couple songs with them. I have performed with Solome and its always such an amazing time with her, so I’m looking forward to when we sit down and make a record.

Qn: What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you while performing on stage?

I am not sure I have had too many funny moments but there was a time the crowd wanted me to perform another song after I had finished my set. I improvised with a friend who was performing and we still don’t know how we pulled it off to this day!

Qn: Are there any projects in the works that we should look out for?

Well, I currently have a project out named ‘X-tension.’ But you should expect at least one more project from me this year.

Qn: Where do you see Lagum five years from now?

I see myself as an established producer/artist world-wide. Touring Africa and making Uganda famous for the right reasons.

Qn: What advice would you give to a young upcoming artist?

I’m still upcoming myself to be honest. I haven’t reached my goals for this year yet. But I will say that if you keep working on your craft, always looking to improve, and believing that God will make a way, things will start happening for you faster than you think.

Qn: Your top five rappers of all time?

Eminem would be first on the list in my opinion. Followed by Tupac, Biggie, Kendrick Lamar, and then Lupe Fiasco. A lot of people are going to scream but that’s what I think!

Qn: This will be your second performance at Blankets and Wine Kampala. What should people expect from you?

People should expect some laid back moments as well as some energy. That’s all I will say without revealing too much.

An Alikiba affair at the 15th Edition of Blankets and Wine Kampala

The 15th edition of Blankets and Wine Kampala lived up to its billing as it had been promised. The event that took place on Sunday at the Lugogo Cricket Oval has absolutely cemented itself as the must attend event on Uganda’s social calendar.

From the lineup of artistes, the festivities, the guest list, to the fashion sense; everything seems to naturally fall in place. Multi-instrumentalist Giovanni Kiyingi, The Mith, Jemimah Sanyu, DJ Naselow and Alikiba from Tanzania were the headline acts.

Prior to the event, Alex Tusingwire, the Tusker Malt Lager Brand Manager and its partners House of Deejays, were coming together to give consumers a refreshing, fun-filled end of year experience.

“This time as is the norm, we have a vastly talented artiste line up performing. Simply put, it is a unique cocktail of musical genres; with a perfect blend of fresh afro-fusion and familiar world music. These acts will give us a perfect ending to the year,” he said.

On a bright Sunday afternoon on December 18, 2016, the Lugogo Cricket Oval was the place to be.

By midday, queues were already building up as revelers, with their picnic bags in tow made their way to the venue.

The performances were kicked off by Jemimah Sanyu who sang many of her songs off her ‘Amaaso go googera’ album.

Not only did Giovanni Kiyingi impress with the smooth sounds from his many instruments, he also showed vocal prowess. He sang some of the songs from his latest album as well as some from his highly anticipated album. By the time Hip hop artist, The Mith took to the stage, the crowd was on their feet. The rapper made his performance interactive as his band backed him up.

The day’s deejays, FEM DJ who kept the crowd entertained and dancing in between acts, and DJ Naselow who kept them dancing even after Alikiba’s performance were a thrilling addition to the lineup.

The headlining act, “Alikiba” famous for his songs like; “Mwana” “Aje” “Chekecha cheketua” showed just how much afro music is loved.

When he finally kicked off his performance, it was a case of ‘who could jump highest, who would bend lowest and who would shake best.’

The artist who also loves to dance, played songs like “Cinderella”, “Nakshi Nakshi” “Usiniseme” “Dushelele” “Single Boy” which brought out some insane dance strokes from revelers.

“This year we wanted to bring in a new musical experience to the Blankets and Wine event. Alikiba, whose is loved and danced to, is dominating international airwaves, was the perfect choice. For Tusker Malt Lager, this is our way of showing our appreciation to our consumers by giving them the best.” said Alex Tusingwire Tusker Malt Lager’s Brand Manager.

A quarterly, picnic style music festival, Blankets and Wine is proudly sponsored by Tusker Malt Lager alongside other partners.
