  • DESCHAMPS DISCUSSES WHY LACAZETTE IS NOT IN THE FRANCE SQUAD

DESCHAMPS DISCUSSES WHY LACAZETTE IS NOT IN THE FRANCE SQUAD

France manager Didier Deschamps has been discussing his reasoning behind the recent exclusion of Alexandre Lacazette from the national squad.

The Arsenal striker is currently in a rich vein of form and appeared to be in contention for France’s upcoming fixtures, with the international break now underway.

However, Deschamps opted to overlook Lacazette despite his impressive displays in recent times.

Deschamps, who led France to World Cup glory in the summer, was quizzed on Lacazette’s omission following the announcement of his squad and explained his decision.

As quoted by GFFN, the experienced manager spoke of his desire to achieve balance in the France squad, whilst urging Lacazette to continue pushing for his place on the international stage.

There is competition for each position. When the players who were at the World Cup are performing well… It is not a question of the type of player, but of position.

I need balance in the squad and he is a central attacker. He must continue.

The former Lyon striker has established himself as a key man for Gunners boss Unai Emery.

At the weekend, Lacazette was in fine form and found the net on two occasions as Arsenal came away from Craven Cottage with a 5-1 win against Fulham.

End of an era: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger set to leave club at end of season

    BBC News

Arsene Wenger is to leave Arsenal at the end of the season, ending a near 22-year reign as manager.

The Frenchman departs a year before his latest contract was due to expire.

The Gunners are sixth in the league and set to miss out on a top-four spot for the second straight season, with their hopes of reaching the Champions League resting on winning the Europa League.

Wenger, 68, won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups, including the Double in 1998 and 2002.

“I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years,” said Wenger. “I managed the club with full commitment and integrity.

“To all the Arsenal lovers, take care of the values of the club.”

Arsenal say a successor will be appointed “as soon as possible”.

Arsenal majority shareholder Stan Kroenke described Friday’s announcement as “one of the most difficult days we have ever had in all our years in sport”.

He added: “One of the main reasons we got involved with Arsenal was because of what Arsene has brought to the club on and off the pitch.

“His longevity and consistency over such a sustained period at the highest level of the game will never be matched.”

Arsene Wenger Premier League stats: Games 823, wins 473, losses 151, goals scored 1,549, league titles

The American praised Wenger’s “exceptional record”, adding that he “transformed the identity of our club and of English football with his vision for how the game can be played”.

Appointed on 1 October 1996, he is the Premier League’s current longest-serving manager and has taken charge of a record 823 games.

But some fans have turned on the Frenchman over the past two seasons as a result of their league performances.

Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Newcastle was their 11th in the league this season, equalling their worst tally in a campaign under Wenger.

They are 33 points behind leaders Manchester City, who have 87 points, and the same number away from bottom side West Brom, who have 21.

Arsenal finished outside the top four last term for the first time since Wenger arrived at the club, and are now 14 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, with five matches remaining.

They face Spanish side Atletico Madrid, who are second in La Liga, in the Europa League semi-finals, with the first leg on Thursday.

    Wenger’s ups and downs

Wenger won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups in his first nine seasons in charge.

In 2003-04, he became the first manager since 1888-89 to lead a team through an English top-flight season unbeaten.

But after winning the 2005 FA Cup, they waited another nine years – or 3,283 days – for their next silverware. It came as they beat Hull City to win the 2014 FA Cup, before winning the trophy again the following season.

Wenger won his seventh FA Cup last season, beating Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley, but finished 18 points behind Antonio Conte’s Premier League champions.

His side have struggled in Europe since losing to Barcelona in 2006 Champions League final.

They were eliminated at the last-16 stage for the seventh successive season on their last appearance in the competition in 2017, losing 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich.

In 2006, they moved into the £390m Emirates Stadium after leaving Highbury.

The Gunners have consistently spent less than their main Premier League rivals on new signings, but Wenger twice broke the club’s transfer record this season.

France striker Alexandre Lacazette joined in the summer for £46.5m, while his final signing was Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for £56m in January.

    Who’s next?

Former Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel has already been linked with the job, while Wenger himself said former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira “has the potential” to succeed him.

Tuchel is the favourite with the bookies at the moment, ahead of Germany boss Joachim Low and former Real Madrid, AC Milan and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti.

“We have high ambitions to build on Arsene’s remarkable tenure and to honour his vision by ensuring Arsenal competes for and wins the biggest and most important prizes in the game,” added Kroenke.

Arsenal complete £56m Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signing from Borussia Dortmund in club-record deal

    DailyMail

Arsenal have completed the club-record £56million signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund confirmed the news on their Twitter account on Wednesday, before Arsenal then shared a series of pictures of Aubameyang posing in the club’s home kit, pulling a variety of animated poses. He has become the best-paid player in the club’s history on a three-and-a-half-year contract worth £180,000 per week.

The 28-year-old striker is part of a transfer merry-go-round that will see Olivier Giroud leave the Gunners for Chelsea and Michy Batshuayi quit Stamford Bridge to replace Aubameyang at Dortmund.

But Aumbameyang brings with him a bad-boy reputation, having been the subject of several disciplinary proceedings by Dortmund as he pushed for a move away from the club.

A statement from Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc alluded to the recent problems, saying: ‘Apart from the unpleasant events of recent weeks, we like to remember that the story of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at BVB for more than four years was a single success story.

‘He has done great things for Borussia Dortmund at this time, scored many important goals and is part of the team that brought the DFB Cup to Dortmund in 2017. We wish Pierre-Emerick all the best for his future at Arsenal.’

He scored 141 goals in 212 appearances for Dortmund that includes 98 goals in 144 Bundesliga games

Averaged 96 minutes per goal or assist for Dortmund

He is fast enough to have run 30 metres in 3.7 seconds

He is the scorer of Gabon’s first and only Olympic goal, at London 2012

The move for the explosive striker has been driven by Arsenal’s recently-appointed head of recruitment Sven Mislintat.

Aubameyang does not fit the usual profile of player the Gunners have tried to sign in recent years.

At 28, he is likely to have little resale value. Similarly, his sometimes criticised attitude represents a shift from the type of personality the club have targeted under Arsene Wenger.

The Arsenal manager and chief executive Ivan Gazidis arrived at their London Colney training ground on Wednesday morning as they tied up the Aubameyang deal.

Wenger appeared in serious mood as he drove in just hours after his side’s humiliating 3-1 defeat at struggling Swansea.

But the boss may well have a smile back on his face after completing the impressive signing of a striker who has excelled in the Bundesliga. He scored 141 goals in 212 appearances for Dortmund.

Aubameyang was spotted leaving Dortmund Airport on Tuesday, gathering his belongings from a gold Range Rover before heading towards a back entrance.

The Gabon international then flew to Luton Airport on a private jet, accompanied by his father Pierre and his brothers Catilina and Willy, to finalise the move.

After touching down in England, he headed to Arsenal’s training ground and was spotted arriving at the London Colney base where he then had his medical.

Aubameyang withdrew on Monday from appearing as a witness at a court case of the man suspected of targeting Dortmund’s bus with three bombs last April.

Officially, Aubameyang is sick and cannot attend and Dortmund had given him permission to stay away.

Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud is now heading to Chelsea, with Blues striker Michy Batshuayi joining Dortmund on loan.
