London Derby: Arsenal and Chelsea Clash with Title and Top-Four Stakes on the Line

The spotlight falls on the Arsenal and Chelsea rivalry once again on Sunday 1 March 2026, as the London heavyweights collide at the Emirates Stadium in a match that could have major implications at the upper end of the Premier League table.

Arsenal begin the weekend perched at the summit, but the mood around N5 is a little edgier than it was a fortnight ago. A frustrating 2-2 draw against bottom-of-the-log Wolves last week — in which they surrendered a two-goal lead — has invited renewed pressure from title rivals Manchester City.

Having finished as runners-up in each of the past two seasons, the Gunners are desperate to avoid an unwanted hat-trick of near-misses.Their home form remains a cornerstone of their challenge, and they will view this derby as an opportunity to reassert authority.

Yet recent stumbles have highlighted vulnerabilities, particularly in defensive transitions, and Chelsea possess the pace and confidence to exploit any hesitation. The visitors arrive with growing belief under new head coach Liam Rosenior. Appointed midway through the campaign, Rosenior is unbeaten in his first six Premier League matches in charge — a run that has reignited their push for a top-four, or potentially top-five, finish and a coveted Champions League berth.

Chelsea’s structure looks sharper, their pressing more coordinated, and there is renewed resilience in tight moments. This will be the fourth meeting between the sides this season. Their league encounter at Stamford Bridge ended 1-1 in November, while Arsenal edged both legs of the League Cup semi-final — winning 3-2 away before sealing the tie with a 1-0 victory at home earlier this month. Familiarity breeds intensity, and there will be little margin for surprise.Historically, Arsenal hold the edge in this fixture.

Across 214 meetings in all competitions, they have 87 wins to Chelsea’s 66, with 61 draws. That statistical advantage, however, will count for little once the whistle blows. With Arsenal fighting to protect top spot and Chelsea chasing Europe’s elite competition, the stakes are considerable.

Expect a high-tempo, tactically charged derby — one that may significantly shape the trajectory of the title race and the battle for Champions League qualification alike.

The midfield duel between Declan Rice and Cole Palmer could define the rhythm of the London clash between Arsenal and Chelsea. Rice will anchor Arsenal’s engine room, tasked with breaking up play, winning second balls and setting the tempo as the Gunners push to assert control. Opposite him, Palmer offers Chelsea their spark between the lines, drifting into pockets to create, carry and threaten with clever movement and sharp decision-making. If Rice can stifle Palmer’s influence, Arsenal gain control. If Palmer finds space, Chelsea gain belief. It’s a battle of authority versus invention at the heart of the contest.

The tactical duel between Mikel Arteta and Liam Rosenior promises to be pivotal at the Emirates. Arteta’s Arsenal will look to dominate possession, control the midfield, and press high to force Chelsea into errors, relying on structured build-up and quick transitions. Rosenior, meanwhile, will aim to disrupt Arsenal’s rhythm, exploiting space in transition and encouraging his players to attack in wide channels. Set-pieces, pressing triggers, and defensive compactness will be key. Ultimately, it’s a clash of styles: Arteta’s structured, possession-based approach against Rosenior’s adaptive, counter-attacking strategy, with each coach seeking to outthink the other from the touchline.

Wembley In Sight: Carabao Cup Semis Wrap Up In Early February

The Carabao Cup semifinals reach their decisive second legs with Wembley in sight and pressure dialed all the way up. Two ties, two very different scorelines, and four clubs chasing a domestic trophy that often reveals its importance only when it’s almost within reach.

At the Emirates, Arsenal return home with a slender 3–2 advantage over Chelsea, knowing that margins this fine rarely allow comfort. The first leg delivered chaos, quality and momentum swings, with Chelsea staying alive through goals that ensured the tie remains delicately balanced.

For Arsenal, the context is bigger than one competition. They continue to juggle Premier League ambition and Champions League momentum, still dreaming of a potential quadruple that would define an era. Mikel Arteta has been keen to strike the balance between confidence and caution. “What we did the other day at Stamford Bridge should help us to be very convinced that we have the ability to do that,” Arteta says. “But the reality is you have to show it in every game. There is still so much to happen. We are glad that we are still alive in the four competitions.”

That mindset frames this second leg perfectly: Arsenal have shown they can rise to the occasion, but cup football rarely rewards reputation alone.Chelsea arrive with nothing to lose and plenty to prove under new coach Liam Rosenior. The first leg showed attacking promise and vulnerability in equal measure, and this return fixture becomes a test of belief, structure and nerve. A single goal changes the entire emotional temperature of the night, and Chelsea know that early momentum could tilt the tie dramatically. The following night, Manchester City host Newcastle United with a more commanding cushion. City’s 2–0 first-leg victory places them firmly in control, but cup history is littered with reminders that no lead is immune to pressure.

Newcastle, after all, are the reigning Carabao Cup holders, and pride alone ensures this will not be a passive exercise. Eddie Howe has framed the challenge in terms of belief rather than odds. “We’re still alive, we’re still in there fighting, although it is very difficult to turn it around. It’s still possible and football can conjure up some magical moments,” Howe says. “Last year, we were on the other side of this scoreline. We went to Arsenal and won 2-0 and we felt that game was still very much alive, it was all about the next goal in the tie. I think that’s going to be the case in this one – if we can get the next goal, we’re still very much in it.”

For City, the task is familiar: manage the game, control the rhythm and avoid gifting belief. For Newcastle, it’s about bravery and timing – finding that “next goal” before City’s grip tightens. Two semifinals, two narratives, and four clubs standing one step from Wembley. Over these nights, the Carabao Cup reminds everyone that knockout football doesn’t ask how good you are – only whether you deliver when it matters most.

  • DStv Match of the week – Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal, 15 September 2024

DStv Match of the week – Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal, 15 September 2024

The North London derby pitting Tottenham Hotspur against Arsenal is typically one of the best fixtures on the Premier League calendar, with these two arch rivals almost always producing exciting, attacking encounters that live long in the memory.

    Match background

Spurs will host Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the mid-afternoon of Sunday 15 September. It will be each team’s first truly ‘big’ clash of the season, and coming straight off an international break it will be key for both to find their rhythm and sharpness as soon as possible.

Tottenham are looking to elevate their status in the league to become top-four contenders, while the Gunners want to keep up the momentum in their title bid – as they seek to usurp Manchester City at the third time of asking.

Expect a back-and-forth battle between two sides which are at their best when attacking and keep an eye out for the element of discipline, as temperatures run high in this rivalry and keeping all 11 men on the field could be a key facet in securing the three points on offer.

    What the teams are saying

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou on the challenge of the North London derby:
“It’s just about making sure you embrace the challenge and try to tackle it in the way that got us into this position in the first place. We understand the importance of being at home in these kinds of games to not let our biggest rival win in the biggest derby for us. We understand the consequences of that. I’m not going to dictate how our fans feel and what they feel is important.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on the memories of dominating the derby in recent seasons:
“I have many. The recent ones from the last years as well are beautiful. Living those moments with our supporters when you manage to win the game and that satisfaction that you give to everybody, because it’s a special day for everybody, hopefully we can produce that again.”

    Players to watch.

    Yves Bissouma – Tottenham Hotspur
The Malian has had a mixed start to the season – notably being banned for one game for inhaling laughing gas in a social media post – but his dynamism, aggression and hunger in midfield have truly shone through. He will be a major driving force in this North London derby.

    Thomas Partey – Arsenal
From one powerful African midfielder to another, Ghanaian Thomas Partey will provide steel and resilience in the ‘engine room’ for Arsenal. His battle to boss the middle of the park against Bissouma will be a potentially game-deciding duel.

    Head-to-head

In head-to-head stats, Tottenham and Arsenal have met in 209 matches across all competitions dating back as far as 1896. The Gunners have claimed 87 wins compared to 67 for Spurs, while 55 games have been drawn.

Arsenal is unbeaten in their last four matches against Tottenham and took four points off their arch-rivals in league matches last term, with a 2-2 draw at home in September 2023 and a 3-2 away win in April 2024.

Some of Europe’s best compete in Europa League

Any competition that sees the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Porto, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Lazio competing for the trophy is bound to grab the attention of fans world-wide. It is thus not surprising that the start of this season’s edition of the UEFA Europa League group phase has been much anticipated and on Thursday the wait is finally over.

Last year’s beaten finalists Arsenal begin their campaign in Group F with a tricky away encounter against Eintracht Frankfurt, who last season were only beaten in the semi-finals on penalties by Chelsea, who went on to win the competition.

Frankfurt’s preparations suffered a setback with a defeat against struggling Augsburg in the league on the weekend, but coach Adi Hütter promised a different game on Thursday. “We need to learn from our mistakes, as we are now facing Arsenal. We did not do well against Augsburg, but Eintracht will play in the Europa League and then at home. We have to find the mix now,” he said.

Midfielder Dominik Kohr said the whole team is looking forward to the match against the Premier League side. “That will be an absolute highlight.”

The other two teams in the group, Standard Liège and Vitória Guimarães face each other in Belgium.

Manchester United, who won the competition in 2017 should have the better of Kazakhstan visitors Astana at home in their opening Group L game, while England’s third participant, Wolves will have their work cut out for them if they want to escape Group K.

With Beşiktaş, Slovan Bratislava and Braga – whom they face at home in their opening match – in their group, Nuno Espírito Santo’s team will face an uphill battle to advance to the knock-out stages.

Wolves, who last played in Europe 39 years ago, have several Portuguese players on their books and midfielder Adama Traore believes that gives them an advantage.“The coach comes from Portuguese football and so do many of our players. They know the players and the league, and they have played teams like Braga many times before. “It has to help that we know so much about them and they don’t know so much about us.”

Many older fans see the Europa League as that what the Champions League used to represent, allowing the minnows of European football take on the giants of the sport. One of the teams that made it through to the group phase is F91 Dudelange. Amongst their opponents in Group A are Sevilla, whose squad has a value of 283.20 million Euros. The Luxembourg part-timers of Dudelange are valued at 4.03 million Euros, yet on the field of play they are all the same – and that is the real stuff that dreams are made of.

Football fans throughout Africa can be part and parcel of these dreams as the Europa League will be broadcast exclusively and live throughout the continent on the StarTimes football channels.
