Pictorial: Afrigo Band Celebrates 50 Years with Electrifying Lugogo Concert

Uganda’s legendary Afrigo Band marked five decades of musical excellence with a thrilling concert on Saturday night at the Millennium Grounds in Lugogo.

Dubbed “Legends of Sound”, the golden jubilee show pulled crowds of all ages—proving that the band’s timeless hits still strike a chord with both the old and young.

Despite an evening downpour that threatened to wash out the celebration, the skies cleared and revellers streamed in to witness history. The band hit the stage a little after 10 pm, kicking off a nostalgic journey through their classics, from Jim Wange and Amazzi g’Enyama to Sirina. The audience erupted when MP and fellow artiste Rachel Magoola joined the group for the evergreen Obangaina. The night climaxed with the crowd-favorite Sikulimba.

In true celebratory spirit, Afrigo Band launched a special souvenir magazine chronicling their 50-year journey and lit up the skies with a dazzling fireworks display.

Prince David Wassajja, representing the Kabaka of Buganda, graced the event as Guest of Honour. Delivering the Kabaka’s message, he hailed the band for its immense contribution to Uganda’s creative industry, describing Afrigo as a “cultural treasure that has united generations through music.”

The jubilee celebration also had an international flavour with Congolese music icon Koffi Olomide, alias Le Grand Mopao Mokonzi, who thrilled fans with his legendary hits Ekotite, Papa Mobimba, and Loi.

Organised by Talent Africa in partnership with Stanbic Bank Uganda and the Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC), the show cemented Afrigo Band’s place as the heartbeat of Uganda’s music scene.
