Euro 2020: All to play for between France and Portugal on StarTimes

Football fans are used to expect the unexpected. And that is exactly what happened in the so-called Group of Death at Euro 2020.

The 2016 finalists France and Portugal meet in the Puskás Aréna in Budapest on Wednesday and after their opening games, their fans thought that both Les Bleus and the Seleção would have already qualified for the knock-out stage by the time they face each other.

But in their second matches the unexpected happened.

France needed an Antoine Griezmann goal midway through the second half to draw 1-1 with Hungary, while Portugal gave away a Cristiano Ronaldo lead in Munich against a rampant Germany that ended up winning 4-2. It was the first time that a title holder conceded four goals.

The results leave France topping Group F with four points, Germany and Portugal both have three points, but Germany are second on the head-to-head basis. Hungary have one point.

This leaves the group wide open ahead of the final round of group matches, with all four teams still having a chance to progress.

But with the likes of Ronaldo, Rúben Dias and Bruno Fernandes on the one side and Griezmann, Kylian Mbappé, Karim Benzema and Paul Pogba on the other, it is not surprising that most of the neutral fans will focus on the rematch of the 2016 final.

Portugal, who won the 2016 final 1-0 through Eder’s extra-time goal, will feel the pressure ahead of Wednesday’s game. The Seleção will expect Germany to avoid defeat at home against Hungary, leaving Portugal needing to beat France if they want to finish in either of the two places that would guarantee a place in the round of the last-16.

Although the top four third-placed teams from the six groups will also advance to the knock-out stages, they will be facing a group winner in the next round.

Portuguese coach Fernando Santos took the blame for the defeat against Germany, but remains confident. “Whether we progress or not is still up to us. And we must respond against France.”

But if Portugal have some pressure on them, France will also be feeling the heat. A defeat or draw for them and a victory for Germany would see Les Bleus slip from first to third and anxiously looking at the results from the other groups.

A win for Didier Deschamps’ team on the other hand, would secure a game in the next round against a third-placed team.

Deschamps, however, might be without Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembélé, who had to be taken off with a knee injury after coming on as a substitute against Hungary.

With so much at stake, football fans will be spoilt for choice as both games are being player at the same time. But African football fans need to miss none of the best action as the Euros are being shown live and in HD on the StarTimes channels.

Euro 2020 fans who haven’t joined StarTimes, simply buy our decoders at 39,000/- and 99,000/- for antenna and dish respectively or download the StarTimes ON app to watch the Euro 2020 Live and in HD with local commentary. • Manchester United hoping semi-final run will end

Manchester United hoping semi-final run will end

As they go into Thursday’s first leg Europa League semi-final against Roma on Thursday, Manchester United can look back at the experience of four other cup semi-final appearances within the last 16 months.

The bad news though is that the Reds have ended up on the losing side in all four semi-final ties they have played since January 2020.

They lost in the League Cup semi-final against Manchester City twice in a row, were beaten by Chelsea in last season’s FA Cup semi-final and were knocked out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage by Sevilla last season.

Ahead of Thursday’s match at Old Trafford defender Luke Shaw said the team was aware of the run of four semi-final defeats. “We’ve had a few semi-finals in the last two years and we haven’t been successful in them. It’s a chance to make a step in the right direction and get through that and win that competition.”

United played to a goalless draw at Leeds on Sunday, which took their uneaten away record to 24 games.

“It’s a very good record, it’s one we don’t look too much into, that’s maybe been a positive our away record, but our home record hasn’t been good, we know we need to be better at home and get much better results.

“It’s a good record but it doesn’t count for anything with where we are in the league. We need to keep improving and we’ve got the Europa League, we need to win that and that should be our main focus now.”

United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær opted not to pick Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani for the match against Leeds, ensuring that the attacking players should be well-rested for Thursday’s clash.

The other semi-final in the lucrative competition sees Arsenal travel to Spain for their game against Villarreal on the back of a disappointing 1-0 league defeat at home against Everton.

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno was at fault for the only goal of the game and coach Mikel Arteta could be tempted to give Australian Matt Ryan a starting place.

Arteta played Ryan in a recent league match, explaining that the Australian international deserved to play. “We put Mat in goal because he trains like a beast.”

One player who seems likely to be in the starting line-up is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Gunners’ fans will be hoping that the Gabonese international finds the goals they need to get through to their ninth European cup final.

For African fans the Europa League semi-final matches are yet another footballing highlight that they can watch live and exclusively on the football channels of Africa’s leading digital-TV operator.

And starting from June 11th, StarTimes is going to broadcast all matches of the UEFA Euro 2020 live and in HD.

  • 2022 World Cup Qualifiers: Europeans begin road to Qatar

2022 World Cup Qualifiers: Europeans begin road to Qatar

    By Peter Auf der Heyde

For the 55 countries that are members of Europe’s governing football body, UEFA, the road to Qatar begin this week. Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and all European stars will be facing each other during the coming days

Later than their counterparts in Asia and South America, European countries only begin their 2022 World Cup qualifiers with three match days staggered over seven days, starting on Wednesday (24th March 2021).

The world’s top two ranked countries – Belgium and France – begin their quest for a place at the 2022 finals in Qatar with tough home matches on Wednesday.

The reigning world champions France, who are ranked behind Belgium, are at home to Ukraine in the Stade de France in Paris.

Coach Didier Deschamps has recalled Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele into a star-studded squad, that includes the likes of Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann, Anthony Martial and Kylian Mbappe.

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, whose side welcomes Wales to the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, will be without captain Eden Hazard, who is still labouring with a recurring muscle injury that has severely restricted his playing time this year.

Martinez is also sweating over the availability of star striker Romelu Lukaku, who might have to miss the game due to an outbreak of the coronavirus in his Inter Milan team.

There was also some bad news for Welsh caretaker manager Robert Page as Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out with a thigh injury.

The Wales football federation tweeted: “Aaron Ramsey is unable to join up with the squad due to injury.”

The last time the two met was at the 2016 Euro finals, when Wales stunned Les Diables Rouges 3-1. Several of the players who starred in that game, including man of the match Hal Robson-Kanu and captain Gareth Bale will be making the trip to Belgium.

Just three days later, Belgium face a tricky game, away to the Czech Republic in Prague.

Jaroslav Šilhavý’s team are regulars at the Euro finals, but they have only once qualified for the World Cup finals since competing internationally as the Czech Republic in 1994.

The other stand-out clash on matchday two sees Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal team-mates away to Serbia, also on Saturday.

Portuguese coach Fernando Santos has an abundance of riches upfront, with captain Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, André Silva, João Félix and Diogo Jota all being good for goals.

Serbia has twice played at the World Cup finals – in 2010 and 2018, but failed to advance past the group stage on both occasions, though they did manage to beat Australia (2010) and Costa Rica (2018).

Football fans throughout Africa will be able to watch these – and other – World Cup qualifiers live and in HD on the StarTimes football channels.

Make sure you do not miss out on any of the exciting competition brought to you by Africa’s leading digital-TV operator, StarTimes, which has secured the broadcasting rights for the European World Cup qualifying competition and the EURO 2020.

  • It’s back!!! Watch Bundesliga on StarTimes

It’s back!!! Watch Bundesliga on StarTimes

Bundesliga fans you have the reasons to smile because the Germany league is back on StarTimes, we confirm.

For the fans and those who have been following this league, you can surely conclude that for the last two seasons RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund have been the best of the rest behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

StarTimes Uganda Marketing Director, Isma Lule, in high gear for the Bayern game this weekend

And there is little to suggest that Dortmund and Leipzig will not be amongst the main challengers this time around again.

On Saturday, Dortmund travel to Leipzig in a match-day 15 game, both teams need to win to try to keep the pace with Bayern at the top of the table.

Dortmund, who somewhat surprisingly fired coach Lucien Favre last month after the team slumped to a 5-1 defeat at home against VfB Stuttgart, secured a 2-0 victory against Wolfsburg on Sunday to move to fourth place – eight points behind Bayern.

The result was not the only good news for new coach Edin Terzić, as the 38-year-old, who has been given a top flight team to coach for the first time in his career saw Jadon Sancho score Dortmund’s second goal.

It was the first goal the English international scored in the league this season.

Sancho was one of Dortmund’s top scorers last season, scoring 17 goals, but has been struggling to find his form since the start of the season.

Leipzig, meanwhile, also go into the game in the RB Arena on the back of a victory, having won 1-0 at VfB Stuttgart through Dani Olmo’s second half goal.

Table topping Bayern, who face old rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach in Friday’s match, also won in the weekend – turning a 2-0 half-time deficit against Mainz into a 5-2 victory.

Bayern and Mönchengladbach were fierce rivals in the 70s, as they were the dominant clubs in Germany during that time, winning eight titles.

The four club facing each other in the two games are the Bundesliga’s representatives in the Champions League and all four have made it out of the group stage and will be participating in the first round of the knock-out stage that will be played over four weeks in February and March.

Mönchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus knows the Bayern players well from his time with the German national team. “We want to measure ourselves against the best teams in the world. We have already done that in the Champions League and we are now facing the next huge task in the Bundesliga.

Traditionally Bundesliga is one of the top leagues in Europe and world at large. Currently Bayern Munich is the Champion of Europe.

  • #40days40Fintechs; StarTimes Solar lights up rural communities

#40days40Fintechs; StarTimes Solar lights up rural communities

While previously life for most Ugandans, especially those living in rural areas, would come to near standstill after sunset due to lack of electricity, the emergence of innovative lighting solutions is helping rewrite the story.

Hundreds of people now have access to solar power, thanks to products like StarTimes Solar, which is lighting up communities around the country.

Provided by digital television service provider StarTimes, the product which speaks to the day-to-day needs of ordinary Ugandan at the grass root, offers a two edged solution of lighting and a television signal to enable customers have access to information.

With an initial payment of UGX 239,000, one gets a complete package that includes a 24-inch digital television, solar panel, digital battery, four LED bulbs, phone charging cable and a satellite dish and accessories, and only pay Ush3, 000 daily installments thereafter for two years, according to Eric Obote, the StarTimes Solar sales manager. Daily payment is done through mobile money.

Additionally, customers get free access to StarTimes channels for two years.

Obote said that the product that was conceived in January 2019 but officially launched in May the same year, starting with the central region has since expanded to almost all parts of the country.

It currently has 26 branches across the country.

“Our focus is reaching people at the grass root level. The companies that were providing solar solutions previously were unable to give the right products to people in villages but we do,” he said.

The StarTimes Uganda public relations manager, Cleopatra Koheirwe said the solar product is most beneficial to women, given that they are in most cases the ones who are always helping children with homework yet most people in rural areas do not have electricity.

Obote and Koheirwe were speaking during an interaction with HiPipo, during the ongoing 40-days-40-FinTechs initiative.

The initiative is organised by HiPipo, in partnership with Crosslake Tech, ModusBox and Mojaloop Foundation.

It seeks to enable FinTechs to innovate solutions that facilitate cross-network financial transactions at minimal risks to enhance access to financial services.

Running for 40 days, the project will see the participating 40 FinTechs acquire interoperable development skills to improve access to financial services, using the Mojaloop open source software.

The HiPipo CEO Innocent Kawooya said StarTimes Solar is in line with the HiPipo agenda of using financial technology to transform lives.

“The reason we think of technology and innovate each single day is because we want to ensure that we create technology that solves problems which humans would not be able to solve easily,” Kawooya said.

He added: “StarTimes came from a digital inclusion point of view and is now offering value-added services. Understanding your customers’ problems and work towards addressing themchanges people’s lives.”

He noted that allowing their customers to affordably make payment for solar at minimal instalments of UShs3,000 per day, using mobile money relates to HiPipo’s tagline of prime stories in financial technology that are transforming millions of lives.

Kawooya, however, said there is need to synchronize more to enhance interoperability.

“Today we want to ensure that as the product grows, it seamlessly allows anyone to have StarTimes solar. And if someone is banking with Finance Trust, they do not have to be asked to have mobile money; they should be able to pull with whichever payment provider, using an interoperable system like Mojaloop, which allows every user and customer to pay you conveniently.

He pledged that as they shine a light on this story, they would help StarTimes to ensure that its solar product is fully adapted to increase access to solar energy across the country.
