  • La Liga: Real Madrid smiling ahead of El Derbi, to watch live on StarTimes

La Liga: Real Madrid smiling ahead of El Derbi, to watch live on StarTimes

Had the El Derbi been played last weekend, it would have been a game between the top two teams in the La Liga.

But after this weekend, three places and 10 points separate the two teams from the Spanish capital.

Real are topping the table with 39 points, while their city rivals Atlético are fourth – 10 points behind, though they have a game in hand.

Real go into the 207th edition of the derby on the back of a convincing 2-0 victory at Real Sociedad, while Atléti gave away a one-goal lead at home against Mallorca and went on to lose 2-1.

With players like David Alaba, Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Luka Modric available, Real coach Carlo Ancelotti had the luxury of keeping Belgian midfielder Eden Hazard on the bench.

Ancelotti’s star striker Karim Benzema might be missing for Saturday’s game at the Santiago Bernabéu as the French international had to be substituted against Sociedad and seems likely to miss at least Los Blancos’ midweek Champions League match.

The player who replaced him, Luka Jovic, was in excellent form, setting up Real’s opener through Vinicius Junior and scoring the second himself. Modric praised the Serbian international, who must be a contender to start in the derby, especially if Benzema is not available.

“He put in a very good performance despite not playing regularly.  He showed that we can count on him.” Atlético, of course, have their own crop of star players available, with Luis Suárez, Antoine Griezmann, José María Giménez, Koke and João Félix all being seasoned internationals.

Diego Simeone will be without Stefan Savic on Saturday though, as the influential centre back whose absence was severely felt in the latter stages against Mallorca, had to be substituted with an injury early in the first half.

Simeone expects his team to bounce back from the defeat against Mallorca. “This result hurts us, that’s the reality. But we have to continue into the next games. “Either you get depressed or you rebel, I trust this squad and the coaching staff to work hard and redirect to the paths we know well,” he said.

Football fans in Africa will be able to see whether Real Madrid can add another win to their impressive record as the game will be broadcast live and in HD on the StarTimes channels.

  • Bundesliga: The world look forward to Der Klassiker, only on StarTimes

Bundesliga: The world look forward to Der Klassiker, only on StarTimes

There are a number of football matches that grab world-wide attention whenever they are played.

Borussia Dortmund against Bayern Munich is one of those. And certainly in Germany, it gets no bigger than Der Klassiker, especially if it is – as it is this time again – a top of the table clash that would allow the home side to climb above Bayern with a victory.

Going into the game, Bayern are on 31 points – one ahead of their rivals. Third-placed Bayer Leverkusen are already seven points behind the Bavarian giants. Both Dortmund and Bayern achieved morale-boosting victories on the weekend – Bayern struggling at home to a 1-0 victory against Arminia Bielefeld, while Dortmund won 3-1 at Wolfsburg.

The most important aspect of the Dortmund victory though, was the return of Erling Haaland, who played his first game since September 19, having missed more than a month after injuring his hip flexor. The 21-year-old, who came on as a late substitute, scored his side’s third goal to take his Bundesliga tally to an incredible 50 goals from 50 matches – six more than any other player had scored at that stage in the history of the league.

With Haaland back in action, Der Klassiker is not only a match-up between the two top clubs in Germany, it is also a match-up between the two best strikers in Germany and possibly even currently in the world. Dortmund against Bayern, or Haaland against Robert Lewandowski.

Despite playing in just seven matches, Haaland has found the back of the net 10 times this season, while Lewandowski has scored 14 goals from 13 matches.

Last year, Lewandowski topped the scorer charts with a sensational 41 goals from 29 matches, while Haaland was third top scorer with 27 goals from 28 matches. Dortmund coach Marco Rose is thrilled to have the Norwegian back. “Erling gives us a lot of energy when he’s on the field.

He’s a difference-maker that you cannot replace in the long run.” That notwithstanding, Rose believes his side need to improve. “Everyone’s looking forward to Der Klassiker. Overall, we know that there are still things we want and need to keep working on. “We need to get better if we actually want to be able to pose a real threat to Bayern.

When they come to our stadium, then we obviously want to take the chance and be present.” It was former Bayern Munich striker Mark Hughes, who said that history favours the brave, but in this case, it clearly favours his former club. Saturday’s game in the Signal Iduna Park is the 105th Bundesliga clash between the two sides and Bayern have not only won 50 of the previous matches, with Dortmund winning 25, they also travel to their rivals on the back of a five-game winning streak. Presumably the first player on Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team list will be French international Kingsley Coman.

The right winger has played in seven Bundesliga Klassiker, winning all of them! To see whether Coman can make it eight out of eight, all you have to do is tune in to the StarTimes channels, as Africa’s leading digital TV operator will be showing the match live and in HD throughout the continent.

To watch this and much more simply be part of our Christmas campaign named ‘Christmas Level up” that will see our customers win over 200 million in prizes such as Cash, School Fees, Flat Screen TVs, Annual decoder subscription and Many More.

  • Bayern take on surprise team, only on StarTimes

Bayern take on surprise team, only on StarTimes

There is something that SC Freiburg has, that no other Bundesliga club has this season – the team from southern Germany is the only club in Germany to have an unbeaten record in all competitions.

Christian Streich’s team has 21 points from their opening 10 games. They will, however, be tested this weekend as they travel to the Bavarian capital to take on Bayern Munich on Saturday.

The match will be aired live and in HD on the StarTimes World Football channel.

Despite having lost a game, Bayern are where they spend most of their time: At the summit of the Bundesliga. They have 25 points, while Dortmund are on 24.

Freiburg are in third place, three points behind Bayern. The perennial champions bounced back strongly after a disastrous 5-0 defeat at Borussia Moenchengladbach in the first round of the cup, winning 5-2 at Union Berlin on the weekend.

Super striker Robert Lewandowski grabbed two of the goals to take his overall tally for the season to 12 goals from 10 games and is certainly the player Freiburg will be most concerned about.

Lewandowski is, of course, not the only world class player Bayern have in their ranks, with Leroy Sane, Joshua Kimmich, Dayot Upamecano and Kingsley Coman just some of the others. Streich is aware of the task that awaits his side. “Bayern have an enormous quality and I expected them to bounce back from the defeat in the cup. Champions do that.

They come back stronger from a defeat. Bayern have always done that, otherwise they would not be Bayern.” Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, defend their second place in a tough game at RB Leipzig.

Their task will not have been made any easier by the absence of Erling Haaland, who could be out until the start of the New Year with a hip flexor problem. In the absence of the Norwegian international, who has scored nine goals in just six Bundesliga games this season, Belgian international Thorgan Hazard has stepped up, scoring three in the last two games.

Their opponents, meanwhile, are finding the season much harder than they expected and are a disappointing eighth ahead of the game. Unlike Dortmund, who have a recognised goalgetter in Haaland who generally finds a straight line to goal, RB Leipzig’s goals come from all over, with two players with African roots leading the clubs’ scorer charts with four goals.

Danish international Yussuf Poulsen could be playing international football for Tanzania, where his father hails from, while Christopher Nkunku has a DR Congo background. Despite not getting on the scorer charts regularly, Mali international Amadou Haidara has been impressive for Leipzig, as he has featured in every match for his team.

Football fans in Africa will be able to catch the games live and only on the StarTimes channels as the continent’s leading digital-TV operator has secured the Bundesliga rights.

  • Bumper action in La Liga on StarTimes

Bumper action in La Liga on StarTimes

For La Liga fans it can hardly get any better: 20 matches in the space of six days, starting on Tuesday. Real Madrid go into the double-match day as table toppers – but only just – after having to once again come from behind in their last match at Valencia on Sunday. Carlo Ancelotti’s team looked unlikely to escape the Mestalla with maximum points and had to wait until late in the game before top scorers.

Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema combined for two goals. Benzema first provided the assist for Vinicius Junior and then two minutes later scored after being set up by the Brazilian. The 2-1 win took Los Blancos to 13 points – two more than their city rivals Atlético Madrid.

Real are at home to newly promoted Mallorca on Wednesday before welcoming Villarreal to the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday.

Against Valencia, Real’s defensive woes continued as they conceded their seventh goal in just five matches, but upfront, Vinicius Junior and Benzema did what was expected from them: Scoring (their fifth and sixth goal respectively).

The 11 goals the two Real stars have scored in the season so far are nine more than the entire Villarreal team has managed.

Surprisingly though El Submarino Amarillo remain undefeated with four draws from four games ahead of Sunday’s standout match. The only Villarreal players to score so far, are Manu Trigoeros and Arnaut Danjumago who helped their team to a 2-2 draw at Atlético Madrid. One of the players still awaiting his first goal is Senegalese international Boulaye Dia, who joined the La Liga side from Stade Reims at the start of the season. He scored 14 goals in Ligue 1 last season and was brought to Villarreal to put some pressure on former Barcelona striker Paco Alcácer, who helped coach Unai Emery win the 2021 Europa League with Villarreal in this first season in charge, but did not score enough goals for Emery’s liking.

Dia though, still has to get used to the different style that Emery plays, compared to Stade Reims, but most Villarreal fans are confident that it is simply a matter of time before the French-born striker gets his name onto the score chart.

Ugandan football fans will be able to watch live and exclusively whether the 24-year-old gets his first in the La Liga against Real Madrid, as the game is being broadcast on the StarTimes channels.

Uganda’s leading digital-TV operator will be showing all the best La Liga action throughout the season – so make sure you don’t miss out!Catch the All Stars Game as well on Monday 27th at 3:00pm on Sanyuka TV and StarTimes On App, as the Ugandan Football stars selected by you form two teams, Dubymax Kirunda coached By Sam Simbwa and Dubymax Hasule coached by Mike Mutebi battle it out.
